Hi there,

I am looking for some universal motor/prop shaft couplings which do not take up much length. I usually use the Huco type but it is too long for application I have in mind. What other types are available?

Depends on the power you have to transfer, but the two simplest are a length of neoprene tube or a simple home-made dog clutch.

Hello Rick

If you`re really stuck for space, you could grind the end of the motor shaft into a narrow blade and then file a slot in the end of the prop shaft…….similar to a loose fitting mortice and tenon joint……………and you wouldn`t need a coupling at all!

Just a way out idea!………………..Bob

Thanks for your ideas.

I understand Robersch(?) make couplings are these any shorter than the Huco type?

Rick.SHG marine make some natty nylon couplings.A bit goes on the motor, another bit goes on the shaft, and a “dumbell” bit goes in-between,the barrels on either side having a square centre. The bar can wobble and it accomodates quite a wide range of movement. The cylinders were a good tight fit on my shafts and they do have stainless grub-screws. They are a bit shorter than a single Huco, but rattle a bit. cheap, and the wide offset range is dead handy in effectivly a single coupling. What size shaft/propshaft are you aiming to couple, and what sort of power are you transmitting? Ashley

Ah! now we know the application so advice based on experience can be given. Having used many 385 motors and some in submarines, I’m happy to use a short length of silicone fuel tubing. Provided it is a good push fit onto both shafts then it works well. You do need to get the shafts in line to minimise any power losses.

It’s silent, durable and, best of all, cheap.

Hi Rick,

I’ve found that to ensure better grip between the silicone tube and the shaft, a small length of the same diameter tube over the top of the main tube will greatly assist.

I have used it to keep tubes from sliding off the metal tube (or shaft in your case) under pressure. I picked up this hint from a boat magazine many years ago.
