I am very new to model boat construction.

        I intend building a JIF 65.

Normally I build with "Everbuild 502", a water resistant PVA type.

I have used Cyno, from time to time, mostly for tacking.

Rarely use Epoxy Resin of the short set time type (approx 5 minutes to start process).

Very rarely I have used Polyurethane. Do not like it. Tends to be messy, needs effective clamping. Brands used ELK (Henkel) and Gorilla (expensive). Elk has a short shelf live, although you get loads.

In my youth many used Cascamite and Aerolite (Urea Resin) both awkward to use.

I prefer PVAs, is this OK with ply and water?

          Carl,

The water resistant PVA glues are generally OK for model boat building if properly sealed but things have moved on a bit over the years and it is generally considered that Aliphatic glues now offer superior performance and are better to work with. They are not the cheapest but in my view they are the best.

I use DeLuxe Materiales Aliphatic resin as a general wood glue. I also find their Superphatic to be invaliuable as it is a waterbased alternative to cyano and will 'wick' into joints to provide a really strong and waterproof bond. It will also stick many other materials provided that one surface is porous.

For finishing the surface, many of us now use DeLuxe Eze Kote acrylic resin which is water based and less messy to use than epoxy resin although it is a matter of preference. Not cheap but very easy to work with and water clean up. A little goes a long way.

DeLuxe products are available from many online model suppliers as well as from the manufacturere but the prices don't vary much!

Thanks Colin, particularly for a prompt reply.

My problems are now with the plan I have.

I already expect to post a question with respect sheaving model yacht hulls, again I expect with time that will be yet another question..
