Initially used a car aerosol grey primer on the deck/cabin. Then used polyvine acrylic enamel. This paint didn’t give good coverage. Aso produced the deadly ripple effect. Sanded all back. As the deck and cabin are white can I use decorators acrylic white paint instead.

Peter. There is no rhyme nor reason for mixing paint types (I mean over-painting, not actually mixing).

You would have thought an acrylic paint would go over everything but this is not the case.

Depending on the ease of masking up (or whatever) I would use car spray white for convenience, but…

Whereas acrylics seem to be very fussy about what fgoes witrh what, oil based paints are quite happy with each other. I personally use ordinary household white undercoat/topcoat for anything brush painted white.

If the finish (satin/gloss/matt) as delivered by the decorators paint is what you want, then use it, as long as the undercoat is compatible, or even, just use two coats of the decorators.

Thanks again Ashley for your help. The hull fortunately is good as I used car aerosols, grey primer and blue top coat. The white top coat on the grey primer for the deck had disappointing results, hence the use of the white enamel paint and the start of my problems. I will try oil based gloss on the cabin.

Peter. An oil based gloss will definitely cover over any undercoat without reaction. Safe bet. ProperPaint, that is not spray paint. Ashley
