Hi,

I am posting this on behalf of my 84 year old father-in-law who has decided to take on the challenge of building the 1:200 Mantua Titanic model. He has decided to build this with remote control and as such is trying to workout how the propellers fix onto the prop shafts. The propellers supplied are brass as is the prop shaft. The end of the prop shaft has a thread but the propellers have a hole but no thread.

Is it just a case of working out the thread size and getting a tap and die to cut the thread in the propeller or is he missing something.

Any guidance would be most appreciated as he doesn't want to mess anything up.

I`m sure the props supplied without a thread are incorrect and should be returned to the supplier……If you can

Tapping out a prop is quite easy……..If you can grip it in a lathe……….Normally, this is impossible, due to the actual shape being difficult to grip

With great care, you may have success, in the vice

You could buy new props?

It`s most unusual to find props made of brass……..They are normally stainless steel

Could your model be a static?

Roy. Welcome to the MB forum.

If the propshaft is threaded then as Bob says, one would expect the props to be threaded as well (to screw on).

I think that Bob meant to say the shafts would normally be stainless steel..? (which is what I would expect)

Does the hole go right through the prop-boss or is it blind?? Just possibly they were not threaded at the factory.

If you were wanting to r/c it, I would strongly suggest st/st shafts and "normal" screw-on and secure-with-a-locknut type model boat props. Do you know what diameter the shaft is? AND are the prop tubes simply a bit of brass tube or do they have bronze bearings in the ends?

Sorry to ask a lot of q`s but we need to know all the gory details.

If the props as supplied are a sliding fit on the threaded shaft, they were probably intended to be permanently fixed with epoxy. If not, then yes, the factory didn't thread them.

I believe the kit comes in two versions, a static display and a working model – see the Cornwall Model Boats website. Sounds like you have the static version.

Thank you for all the advice. Called Mantua and you were all correct, they had supplied the props for the static kit, so new ones are in the post.
