Andre, do you intend to build Warships, Merchant ships, Historic vessels etc and from what period? Do you intend to build with a view to fitting miniature r/c or static display?

Any shape / style / era you like will make a good first boat as long as it is not too expensive.

You will soon learn the tricks and use them on the second boat.

If the subject boat is one you like rather than suggested by someone else you will put the effort into it.

I have ha d a look around and found and I am now interested in building a plastic model kit of H.M.S Illustrious what do people think? Has anyone built this model kit before?

Andre. All these sorts of kits have the same level of difficulty, be they 1/700 or 1/350 scale ( the galleons are a bit moire tricky!!).

However with a bit of care it is possible to produce a good result. Go slowly, dry fit the bits to ensure a good fit before painting or glueing..

A modern carrier such as the illustrious will be possibly LESS tricky that a smaller battleship or something, less very small fiddly bits. And in any event, a larger model always looks better than a little `un (generally speaking).

I have just done an illustrious, albeit a tichy bit bigger…

Andre, Welcome to model boats as a hobby, are you building as a static model or a radio control floating type? A model which would fulfill both roles is a Revel (previously Matchbox) Corvette. at 1-72 scale it is big enough to make a good sailing model but still have the attributes of a good detailed plastic kit. good luck with whatever you choose to do.

                    Andre,

A working conversion of the Revell corvette HMCS Snowberry is featured in the current issue of Model Boats, you can see a photo of it on the cover here: http://www.modelboats.co.uk/news/article.asp?a=9953

The full build article is also available to view if you are subscriber but by now you should have the issue anyway!

It is a very popular subject and there is lots of build information to be found on the various model boting websites.

HMS Illustrious should also be an interesting build but probably not a very practical working model

                    Colin

Andre. The question to be answered is….do you want to build a static model or do you want to put radio control in it and float it on a pond?

Static;- Any non-galleon type kit will be suitable to start with. An "HMS Victury" type plastic kit more tricky.

Only very few kits are suitable for motorisation. NOT a carrier, might be toooo tricky to get to float upright…

                      Ashley
