For my first R/C boat I decided to do the USS Ripley from the June 2010 issue. When cut to the plans the step in the top of the side falls about 1/2″ in front of bulkhead #2. Am I missing something, or could it be an error in the plans? I’m just going to splice a small section on to the side to fill the gaps.

What thickness of balsa are you making your bulkheads from? They just seem a little on the thin side.

If your sides are marked out and cut correctly,then reposition the bulkhead if you can.

I see what you mean Rick,when you measure the templates against each other,there is a discrepancy of around 1/2” on the lower edge of the hull side. Don’t worry,it’s not you,it ‘s the way that the plan’s been drawn.(It maybe should have been marked as ‘drawing not to scale’)

Just checked my original drawings and it looks like I drew the hull sides one inch too short.

Mr Nelson, the best solution might be to cut out two new side pieces with the bows extended one inch (25 mm) forward. Repositioning the bulkhead may well cause more problems than it solves. The two short sides will not be wasted as they can be cut to make the deck and superstructure parts. By the way, you are to be congratulated on trying the fit of parts before applying any glue, also stopping when things do not look right.

I will contact the editor and see about getting a correction published.

As far as I can tell, the hull sides are the correct length, but the step down in the top is 1/2″ too far forward. The bow is in the correct location when compared to the longitudinal 1/4″ square pieces, and the point when the side starts to angle up matches the end of the hull base.

Humm….. this gets more curious as time goes on.

Just taken the published plan out of the magazine and found that the hull side pieces are infact the correct size. Clearly the magazine employs a very skilled designer to redraw plans for publication and correct any mistakes in the original draft.

Ah!……. I now have the answer. The second bulkhead should be glued to the hull base ahead of the 1/4″ square cross piece. The published plans show it behind this cross piece which accounts for the 1/2″ apparently missing. My original draft did show the correct bulkhead position but was not perhaps as clear as it might have been.

The answer to your problem is to remove the second bulkhead. I guess it is firmly glued in place so cutting it off at the level of the cross piece might be the best thing to do. Then make another bulkhead and glue it ahead of the cross piece.

Sorry about this problem, I promise to check and double check all the damn lines on my next plan.

Ahh..I see it now. If I would have looked at the construction photos in the magazine closer, I might have noticed that.

I’ll do that. I guess I was still a little premature in gluing everything together. There’s still going to be a small gap since the cross pieceis 1/4″ and the gap is 1/2″, but that’s minor.

Before I removed bulkhead 2, I made a new one. I made it higher than the plan and test fitted it in place. When I cut it to 3/32″ less than the top of the side, it was taller than the plan.

The replacement bulkhead is still a little behind the step in the top of the side, but I’ll figure something out.

Progressing along. Up to photo #11 in the article. I’m definitely enjoying the building. Couldn’t have done it just from the plans without the excellent article
