Pleased with the success of my Vosper Corvette,I had a look round for something else to build, and came across the ‘Paladin’ by GG in the October issue 2005 of MB. It didn’t really look like anything, but GG did say that it was loosely based on the unbuilt Type 24,so with a bit of searching,I found a line drawing of her,and I started the build on June 30th. Now this ship won’t be accurate scale wise, but hopefully she will look closer to a Type 24 than GG’s was. Without further adue, here are pics of the current build. I’ve not built her as per GG’s instructions, but as a combi of GG and CH’s methods.

David. Could you enlighten us as to how big the last one was and how big this is please.

I see you have fitted a 380 motor, a good choice for a ship of the likely size indicated as against the size of the motor  (does that make sense??)

A word of caution on the propshaft though, I have indeed been attracted by the lightweight 2mm shaft as i believe you have fitted, but the props are woefully under pitched, and replacements are scarce. The ones I had have been ripped out and replaced by conventional 4mm shaft sized ones. It may pay you to seal the hull and have a test drive before continuing too much detail work.

My previous remark about fitting fixed fin stabilisers and/or a decent sized bilge -keel will also become apparent in this sort of long thin hull…your previous boat being somewhat beamier.

The Vosper Corvette is 25″OAL with a 4″ beam, this new one is 30.5″OAL with a 3″ beam at the base, and a 3.25″ beam at the deck.
I have several Graupner 2mm shaft props already Ashley,as I need them for my renovated Billings Neptune motoryacht.

That’s all the major parts of the superstructure finished now, plus a crude turret fashioned out of scrap balsa.

She’s not finished yet,but she should be near enough for the Warship Weekend’s unveiling.

David. Very good so far. I have just watched the second video…I am afraid you are just going to have to build BIGGER, no doubt about it.

I have settled on 48inches as about the right size…

Is it because this is a good size to fit widthways in my boot..or is is because 48″ is the “standard” length of a bit of balsa/ply sheet from the model shop..or the width of a 4` X 8` sheet of ply/hardboard?? who knows.

Scale starts to affect the look of a boat on the water….the larger the real ship, the smaller the scale used and the smaller it looks on the water..especially next to a much larger scale..tug or P.T boat which may be physically  smaller.

As an aside, your T24 frigate would probably have been EASIER to make at 4 feet long..the details are less fiddly, and the boat is less weight conscious,  it wouldnt  need too much extra power either. A standard 540 would be more than enough.

My 1:96  type 42  is 57″ long and looks every inch of it on the water, even next to a much smaller scale but larger…battleship or whatever.

Ashley  (size DOES matter)  go for it

I just wish that I had the space for bigger boats Ashley, but 36″ is around optimum for storage in my house. I’d be really struggling to find space for something in excess of 4′.

My next build will be bigger at 49″(1/144th),I just need to work out where to put it though.

David. 36″ is a respectable size.  Your corvette would have looked MUCH larger on the water at 36 inches! get plans blown up to the required size (36″) at a copy/print shop, dont worry about the scale being “unusual”.

For storage, I have talked to various bods in the past who put their boats in custom made plywood boxes, nothing fancy, but it enables you to stack the models on top of one another
and thus have more boats in the house…

Another tip for storage is making the masts de-mountable, as they can add considerably to the height of the model, and thus increase storage problems. An easy job if your boat does not have fixed rigging etc etc. as per your frigate.
If that was in a box, the box would be (for instance) 6 inches shorter if the masts could come off.

Quite a breezy day today, but the little frigate coped quite well.

Anchor chains and bollards fitted, along with a temporary chopper.

The Corvette is actually 1/96th scale Ashley,so she fitted in quite well last weekend.
