I kindly inherited this boat from my Grandad and I am halfway through the restoration process.

My experience is more in modelling rather than boats and so I am a bit clueless….. so I was wondering if anyone could tell me:

      1) What is the boat? (My father say”s that it is a pilot cutter, but can anyone confirm that?)

      2) Does anyone have/ could anyone suggest the best place to get plans? As I am in the middle of working on the rigging and could do with all the help I can get!

This boat has been sat in the attic for a good 20-30 years (if not longer) and was in need of some TLC. At the moment I have completely stripped it down, removed all of the paint, re-painted it and the mast and some of the rigging has been put back on.

Once again, thanks for any of your suggestions.

      Kind regards

      Dave

          Hi David

I’m not well up on this type of boat but my mate Bob Abell will be abell to help I’m sure,as if you look in his various albums on this website he is into scratchbuilt sailing ships,But I think he is away in his camper at the moment ,but only for a couple of days and then he will see this thread and help you out I’m sure

Only answered this thread to let you know there is someone here.

My album is the first one with the Rig Supply Ship on the top,and as you can see I’m only into smaller yachts and electrics

Also I have added some work in progress shots in case anyone is interested.

               Hi Dave

If course everyone is interested ,its just that they all seem to be out at the moment perhaps trying out their new winter builds now the better weather is here .
Why don’t you fill in your Profile so we all know what area of the country you are in ,there must be a club in your area that will be a mine of information waiting to be tapped !
Bob will be back to-morrow I’m sure.

It certainly looks as if it might be a pilot cutter but I am no expert. What part of the country did your Grandad come from as he may have made it from a local design?

Its a homemade Bristol Pilot Cutter which is missing its bowsprit and foresail.

That’s what I thought at first but the hull shape doesn’t seem to match up too well. But then it may not have been built from plans. Bob may be able to shed more light on it.

Wow – thanks everyone for the replies! Much appreciated.

My Grandad was a trinity house pilot at Dovercourt/ Harwich, so I was not sure if it could possibly one of the fishing vessels there?

Ducky – thanks again for getting back so promptly! As I am back home for easter I am hoping to get more photos up!

Will keep you all up to date with shots.

Am now having to re-do some of the rigging as of all things mice seem to have taken a fancy to it! Oh well.

                      Thanks everyone for your feedback.

It reminds me of a 1700’s Revenue cutter and assume that since it is not required to chase the wrong doers so the bow sprit and extra sails are missing.  As a pilot cutter required to spend much of its time sitting into the winbd waiting for customers to turn up? The fly in that statement is that I seem to remember that there was a fair amount of competition between rival pilots so speed to reach an incoming vessel would be an advantage.

JC – Sorry for the delay. Thought some updates would be able to give you some more information on whether it is a Revenue cutter.

Just a brief fill in, this project has been going on intermittently (due to terms) for the past year or so. The original boat has been completely stripped of all its paint, re-coated with sprayed enamel paint and all of the rigging has been redone. I am at the last stages of the project and have loved every second of it.

Your boat is looking very nice and I can see the work that you have put into it, it must be hard only doing it when you go home from college ,you must be itching to do a bit more all the time.

Bob the builder has been away for a couple of days in his campervan so has not chipped in on this thread yet,but this is certainly his type on boat, whereas I’m more into yacht’s and building electric’s which my wife sails,as can be seen in my gallery album.

                                    Hello Dave

This is LOUIS HELOISE  a french fishing boat from Harfluer, the rigging will be very similar to your model.

One major improvement I fitted to my model was adding a motor. Without it, scale sailing is really frustrating and even boring at times. All my scale sail boats are fitted with motors for that very reason.

With a motor drive, you can spin the boat round into wind and off you go!

For further info, have a look at my LH gallery

Ducky – thank you for the invite! I am studying in Liverpool so will have to have a trip across at some point (when the lovely exams end – not long now!). It does get a bit fustrating having to wait until holidays to have a proper play, but alas. I have already warned my girlfriend that in my ideal house there will be a large hobbyshop – she has been warned!

Bob – thank you so much for this, it looks spot on and I have already seen bits of the rigging that I have missed out. This model is for display, so on the next one I will have to add a motor. I was having a look at the LH gallery – beautiful work, I had to chuckle because I too had to extra help for the sails (thanks mum – she is a soft furnisher by trade, so she did not even break a sweat!)

Once again, thanks to you both. I have only got a week or so left of holiday so I am hoping to get it finished. I will let you know!
