I am a new member.  see my profile. I have plenty of scratch model building experience but not with boats , dare I say aircraft , possibly some twenty years. So I am devouring lots of the topics on the forum. The Tug Archer is my starting challenge to get into techniques and materials. I would like to build a 1920s yatch like Moonbeam but need to find more information on actual “sailing techniques” and perhaps build a “trainer” model for starters. Any advice or info would be welcome . The Forum is great. Please keep up the good work.

          Hi Mick

The first yacht I built on starting out model boat building on the advice of  a new friend in the club I joined put me onto a Robbe Yacht  “Comtesse” which was nice and easy to build and at £90 was a good price to start with.
I’ve only got one more bit of advice ,do like I did and join your local model boat club and save yourself a lot of trouble by asking other members only too glad to help out . I have found that most members have run out of room to build anything else and are only too pleased to help someone else.

Check out my album for our boats built and bought since my wife and I started in model boats a couple of years ago

          Here is the “Comtesse”

Hi Ducky, Comtesse looks just the job. I have made contact with my local Club which is Doncaster, but each time I have gone to the lake there’s been no one about. Still I’ll keep trying .Thanks for the contact. OOps I’ve just noticed the “typo ” in “Beginners”

               Hi Mick

Our club has 120+ members and only about 20% of them sail ,so keep trying and we have most members on Sundays even though most of them are OAP’s.
My wife bought me a Micro Magic Yacht (by Graupner ) for Christmas which looks good and at £90 for a standard one and £127 for a racing one with Carbon Fibre masts is another good buy and there is a good website for these on helping people with the build

Got to finish the current Model first ,can’t have two on the go at the same time,I’m not that good or have the space to do it.

Hope this is a help to you

                Hi Ducky,

Thanks again for the new info. I am afraid I’m in my 70th year so I qualify as an OAP. You may have seen from my profile that I am a” Biker” also, and am now sharing my passion for riding vintage and modern bikes with the boats as the arthritis prevents me doing  too much winter riding now. I have clicked on to the  magic micro site and found another wealth of material to wade through. I did try a few articles on motors in another mag and thought it was getting too technical for me. So I shall be doing some “sitting alongside Nellie ” as learners in some trdes were told to do in years gone by.

                Once again, many thanks.

                Mick
