I really like this – is it powered by the props or by a propeller. Humm, that doesn’t sound right – I meant by the "air" props or a "water" prop?

Hi John. It is airscrew powered only, with a water rudder for control. 2 X Graupner Speed 280 motors. It`s fairly nippy and very manouverable, not meant to fly of course. L 26" W 36" Ashley

excellent – I belong to a group of RC Boat guys (in Canada) and we often have to do our shows indoors in an overgrown kiddies wading pool. All in good fun but not much space for our main models or sailboats. So, we often try and build fun projects with the pool in mind. The pool also means that small children can get their hands on things – so having delicate models in the pond is not a good idea.

This flying boat looks ‘different’ which is a good thing and kind of robust and simple to build. I thought perhaps a pump spraying water from the gun at the front might add to the kid appeal too.

So, are there some simple plans? or did you just eyeball it? I have built some Glynn Guest designs in the past – simple to build, cheap and last about a season of tough handling – perfect for our pool!

Is there a prototype?

Hi John. there were no plans as such, if you want to message me I will see what I can do about a plan for the boat as built, I should be able to rustle up a paper plan and post it off if you are that keen. This boat was an awful lot easier to build than the Sunderland ! Ashley

For an alternative design .. innitially I was enthused by the Model Boat article of the flying boat but have decided to make a ‘different’ boat for our show in September … I went to the Catalina PBY6 and found enough to work it up, narrowing the wing span etc as suggested at …..

I scaled it to 26 inch length and found I had room for a 12v 1.2Ah battery underneath the wing part of the hull.

JC, go for it ! I would add at least one inch extra depth for the hull compared to the drawn outline up to the cut-up in order that the tail does not drag in the water. Build a card model first to see how much you can shorten the wingspan by. The wing floats will have to be very large like Shorty`s, and dont skimp on the rudder area or swing. Maintenance also has to be considered ie how you are going to change an engine. Shorty`s motors are araldited in, and replacing one requires a bit of cut`n`shut..the other one has them mounted on normal steel mounts, but its easy in that case at the motors are on top of the wing. If you want to cowl them in (like the catalina) then its a bit more tricky, espcially as the wing will not be that strong- when it comes to a bit of push and shove. Ashley

Thanks for the idea JC. I was also considering the good old Canadair CL -215. It’s a local plane and great fun colours which appeal to the kiddies that will be it’s targetted spectators. It’s an easy design to modify I think. I”l let you know how I make out.

My last attempt to entertain started with this “nerf” rocket laucher.

I built a freestyle “dredger”.

Which could open up to fire the rockets. Always gets a hoot from the kids.
