Hello, I’m Revell Walker. I’ve built and sailed model boats since I got hooked on it during a posting to the now-defunct RAF Upper Heyford base back in the 80’s. I enjoyed running boats in the canals and Hyde Park. I’m all over the hobby spectrum, but since I’ve found a great place to run boats, the waterbug has bitten again hard.

I still have challenges I’d like to master, like building my own hulls beyond the Hal Harrison style. There seems to be a dirth of information on how to build a boat hull from formers. Also, eager to trade with my UK friends. Lindberg is about to re- release two old favorites, the Sport Fisherman and Chris Craft Constellation. Two models that will be easy to build and modify to today’s electronics and motors.

When I return, I ‘ll show how I used old ink pens as stuffing shafts! BTW, I love Model Boats magazine! The free plans and the construction articles are juicy with info. Oh yes, I see the wiper style servo speed controls are still in use, can anyone sell those to us Yanks?

Hello all, here is my first try at a wood hull. I had to “fool” myself into making a hull with pointy front end

You`ve left it a bit late there Revel……Wanting a curved bottom!

If you fancy a curved bottom……glue a few thick balsa profiles on….then sand them down `till they look right……then plank it

          You`ve done a good job…..btw

Revell,  I cheat, I hav`nt got the time for round bottoms, so I would have used a base of fairly thick balsa in place of your thin bit, which then sands down nicely around the sides to LOOK like a (bit) of a curved bottom… and after all when its in the water you dont see it too much anyway.

Nb stick a massive engine in it to overcome the lack of hydrodynamic finess!

Or is that too much like heresy????

                Hi Andy,

Yes, It’s huge, 36″ long with an 8″ beam. Next time I’ll knock 2″ off the width for a longer look and pehaps a frigate or Coast Guard cutter. If I do make a frigate or other warship, I’m going to model JMSDF. Japan’s my second home! As for what this hull is going to be, I’m headed towards a service boat of some sort.

Hi Rev looks like a Coastguard style of boat, from what little i know of the US Coastguard.I’m ex services my self having done 5 years in the guards,Grenadier’s, and then a further 10 in the TAVR,National Guard to you, where i left as a Corporal in the Army Catering Corps which sadly no longer exists as our pathetic government combined the Catering Corps and the Royal Corps of Transport into the Royal Logistics Corp or as it’s popularly known as the really large company.I never went to the gulf but did my fair share of N.I. and that was bad enough with one street bringing you tea/cofeee and cake the other bricks petrol bombs and abuse. But hey join the armed forces you go to war thats what you sign up for.On a more cheerfull note i’m building my most ambitious project to date a Leander Class Frigate from the 1970’s Royal Navy and i must say, modestly,it’s looking good well so far so good. She measures 4′ 9" or 1.45 m length by 8" ,20cm,wide and i’m not to sure of the exact height as yet.Sorry rev but whats JMSDF ??? i’ve bult a DUKW from Deans Marine and what a swine of a job !!!!! Speaking of amphibs do you know where i can get any drawings of a Ford GPA ?

Happy boating catch you soon byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

                      Andy,

That ‘s Japan Maritime Self Defense Force, the Navy of Japan after the disbanding of the IJN. Your Leander sounds like you’d need a crane just to place it in the water. I note that building our heart’s desires takes its toll on our backs.

                        Hi Len, and thanks!

Well, the MFA wiper/rheostat style is close, but if you take a look at the innards of the red Harbour Boat, you’ll note that there’s a plate attached to a servo with metal wipers. That’s what I’m looking for, I used to pick those up for two or three pounds in Oxford.
