Interested to get views on this one. Superglue is very useful, but I feel it is also pretty noxious as a substance. I suffered no ill effects until very recently, but now whenever I open a bottle my eyes water, my nose rus and I feel distinctly ill. I understand others have had similar experience.

Superphatic and similar glues are very handy and I have moved over to that where possible. But there are fiddly jobs where it is good to have something quick setting. Would people recommend those UV setting glues?  Interested in all thoughts on this subject! Many thanks

As I mentioned only very recently on here, I had a bad experience with a superglue only a couple of years ago when some fumes got into my left eye.  It now frequently feels slightly dry and uncomfortable so I know I did something.  Unfortunately I still believe that superglue is an excellent glue and I have not stopped using it in three different densities, however I am now significantly more careful when I use it.  The challenge I had was when using the very thin type when it wicks quickly into an absorbent material such as tissue, cotton cloth or rope.  Under those conditions it suddenly gives off a white vapour which is very toxic.

Consequently I don’t get my face too close, I keep the windows open and I avoid using the thin on an absorbent surface.  I’ve never had a challenge with the thicker viscosities.  So basically I’m just more careful but still use cyano.

Thanks Richard – yes was the thinner one that was causing the problems and will try using a thicker one with windows open in future if I have to use it!  Hope you have no lasting ill effects.

I have just found and bought this brand of odourless cyano:

            https://bsi-inc.co.uk/adhesives/cyanoacrylate/bsi-super-gold-odourless-foam-safe-gap-fill-ca-1-2-oz

The Super Gold is a thin version while the Super Gold+ is a thicker gap filling one.

I paid £8.99 at Sussex Model Centre for the half ounce bottle. You can pay £1 more on EBay with free delivery for the thinner version. Plenty of online adverts/

Thanks for that Colin, useful to know. I’ve managed without Cyano for sometime now but there are occasions when I do miss using it.

I was also Ok when I first started using it but then started getting a runny nose which would last for a couple of days.

Interesting Colin.  I also note in their product description the fumes effect I described above when using the very thin type.  I’m pleased to see that this seems to be an effect restricted to the very thin type.

I think the biggest challenge I experience with cyano glues is that I invariably waste half the bottle because either the nozzle gets seized into the cap or the cap becomes completely fused on or the nozzle gets totally blocked!

The glue that Colin has recommended is described as a CA glue but its properties seem to be more like a Super Phatic glue.  Its got to be worth a try, if just to see whether I can stop throwing away half full bottles of cyano!

I have only glued one item so far – plastic to metal on one of my liner davits which had come apart. It did set quickly but I also gave it a bit of ‘kicker’ to make sure. I agree that it is easy to waste cyano so the smaller bottles could turn out to be a better buy as long as they are not proportionately too expensive compared with the larger ones.

Workshop is too hot for me at the moment nearly 80F and rising.

Still work in old money Colin? Mines 27 deg.  No point in opening windows as its 29 outside!  I go in for a potter occasionally but don’t stay around for long.  Paint sticks as I apply it and glue sets before it hits the surface!  Well nearly.

We do have a nice fresh breeze though, which is very welcome.

On holiday near Keswick this week. Pleasant 20C and a breeze.  Back home in Notts it’s 32C!

Hope my son remembers to water my veg plot tonight. Don’t like to think what the temperature in my Garden Cabin has been.

Don’t seem to have a problem with Super glue.

Think the last thin Super glue I bought was from a pound shop. Thick Super glue I bought a larger bottle from Amazon. Lasts a couple of years then gets too thick to use.

I have been trying the Bob Smith odourless superglue for tricky joins and so far have not experienced any symptoms (touch wood). It bonds very quickly and effectively.

I won’t try using it intensively but it seems to be a good option for those situations when nothing else will really do.

Thanks Colin. I’ve been having problems with an errant strake that my other glues are having trouble with and have been thinking I will have to resort to CA but use outside.

But have ordered some of the Gold and Gold+ to try. My CA is past its sell by date anyway and I needed to replace.

                                      I’m with you there Ray!

Glue arrived a couple of days ago and today I had a chance to give it a go. Problem was with the strakes on my Swordsman which are plastic glued to ply coated with lightweight cloth and Eze-Kote. When I did a test Deluxe Materials Canopy Glue provided the best bond and on the whole it has done a good job. But there are three sections where the strakes bend at the bow that it failed to bond due to the bends and difficulty in taping down.

I tried some more Canopy Glue but without success partly due to some of the previous being there but also because it remains “rubbery” and so if you don’t get a bond first time you have a problem.

Spent quite sometime with a craft knife scraping off as much of the original glue as I could to ensure a clean and tight fit and then used the Gold+ as it’s medium rather than thin and gap fills slightly. Held in place for about 30 seconds (min. 15 recommended) and job done, solid.

So, thanks again Colin. Relieved on both counts. One that it’s fixed and two that we have a real alternative to the original CA. Can get it painted now!

No guarantees Richard. It has worked for me so far but I am still using it sparingly, so far with no ill effects. Could be different if used intensively in a confined space but I am not going down that route.

I know it’s a while ago, but i have been buying those small tubes of superglue from poundland ( when I can find a poundland) to combat the waste as correctly identified earlier with the larger bottles.

Sometimes it takes a while to go off, or not….possibly as its cheap…but it does the job.

Having got to the stage of fitting fine detail to Silver Mist, I have found myself increasingly resorting to the Bob Smith odourless superglue more and more.

It does have a minor effect on my nasal passages but nothing to concern me. It doesn’t need a ‘kicker’ like a lot of odourless versions either although you can use one. At last it seems I have found a viable cyano glue that works for me. Very useful indeed.

                                                  Hi all.

I’ve been using rocket rapid from either slec or Jadlam.  Doesn’t seem to odourous.  I also use bottle tips which I get from ebay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/225253951440

With them, the glue doesn’t go off and you don’t have to keep putting the lid back on.  Ideal for wicking. They don’t clog easily, but when they do you just cut the tip down a few mm.  Eventually, when they get too short and therefore not so thin use another one.  They push on.  The rocket is in a softer bottle than the locktite, making it more controllable.

Btw, 22° in Zakynthos with a cool onshore breeze.  Nice trimeran in the bay today.IMG_20260524_153550385_SRIMG_20260524_153548979_SRIMG_20260524_144553785_SR

A whiff of the Deluxe Rocket cyano gives me 3 days of severe hayfever symptoms! The Bob Smith odourless would seem to have a diferent formula.

Not been to Zakynthos but have stayed on Cephalonia, Lefkas and Corfu. The nearby Epirus region on the mainland is really good too, we stayed twice at Parga and once at Sivota. We managed day trips to Ithaca and Paxos. It is a lovely part of the world. Enjoy!

Alikanas is quite small, more for older people and nice and quiet.  Quite like Cephalonia IMO, though I guess it depends where you go.

Didn’t like Corfu.  All English breakfasts and football, which doesn’t interest us.  I did however learn there that mermaids wear sea shells because B shells are too small and D shells too big.
