Hi. all, I have been working on my Carona boat over the past few weeks.

      img_0429.jpg

It is Jim Pottinger's Zulu, a free plan in the Feb.issue of MB.

It started as a boat to be built down here at Broadstairs when I was visiting after barge racing at Bluewater but it became a full time build after I was caught down here in the lockdown in mid March.

I didn't take any photo's of the early part of the build but have taken some with my iphone, to get around the problem of the phone rotating some of the pictures I have set it to take them in square format, we will see if that works.

The first pictureis of the hull qnd rubbing strakes, I am waiting for a delivery of half round beading to finish the strakes ready to paint the hull.

      img_0428.jpg

The deck laid with 5×1 mm.lime with black card caulking, the paint was rubbed into the wood using kitchen towel and sanded back to reveal the cauking and grain, I want to finish this boat to look like a working boat so I will be trying my hand at weathering, another first for me.

      img_0425.jpg

The stearing is by chain as per full size.

Hope you are all keeping safe.

      Regards.

      Eddie.

Ray, great photo….where's the beer???? Ashley

Thanks Ashley, and there’s more to add yet, I’m enjoying this build as there was no model detail on

                the plans.

Hi. Ashley, I forgot to mention the reason I planked the deck on Zulu was a practice run before I plank the deck of this 58"x13" schooner.

                    Hi Eddie,

Your schooner takes stich & glue to the next level !! You'll need to raid the church roof for ballast 😀

The guy in the blue shirt is the better driver of the two. I didn't trust the other one in H31 so he now drives the Swordsman. Incidentally, SLEC have a pattern for a ply deck overlay sheet which has the plank lines laser-etched. There's also a matching cockpit floor.

Hi.Ray and Dave, the lead is in stock, not from the church roof this time, I thought I had better leave it for a while.

Dave the laser cut ply sheet is in my kit, and thanks for the tip about the driver, I will keep that in mind when I / we get to do the test run.

                        All the best.

Hi. Tim, I looked on eBay but some very high prices there, I found Tanner Trading, an agricultural merchant.has them all in stock at £8.20 each plus postage, I bought five, the others are for the schooner.

Another boat waiting for me at home, IOM Boxkite, just needs the keel finishing and then it's off to the pond, when we are allowed.

Looking forward to yours and the other Huntsman builds. Never had so many at one time!

I'm going down the laser etched deck route as well, just got to get up to speed with TurboCAD so that I can produce the drawing/file.

                                  Very nice Boxkite Eddie,

As you know I am a big IOM fan. Mine has stalled a bit because my winch failed when testing, just as I was putting everything back together. I can't make up my mind what to replace it with because I can't find the Graupner Regatta anywhere in stock. It would be nice to do a direct replacement as everything inside is already lined up.

                                  What winch are you using?

Looking forward to seeing the reveal of the keel and seeing you zooming around on the water.

Chris reminds me I should post some stuff on my Huntsman 31 build (Precedent Kit with die cut parts)

Hi.all, Tim R. I have fitted a hitec 765 sail arm servo, I replaced a winch in my TSB because it was always giving problems, since fitting the sail arm I sailed it all last year with no hiccups,if I need more power for the IOM I will fit the Hitec 805 with 20 kl.. pull.

Chris I took my most used tools, a 4" square, home made 9" sanding block my favorite knife and plenty of glue, my friend also builds boats so I can use some of his general tools.

Funny that isn’t it, every time I search for anything Amazon is at the top of the list.

I have just had my strong coffee, back to the shed now to put a second coat of paint on Zulu’s bottom.

After that into the garden to do stock take before bedding plants are ordered, it will make change from ordering boat bits.

The Boxkite looks great, but you'll have to sail it upright or the water will go in those holes 😃😃😃

Back from walking the dog and having another strong coffee. We had some gardening supplies delivered this week from a nearby Garden Centre, the delivery charge was £4 so not bad.

I'm going out to the cabin / workshop soon. Trying to finish a storage box for a large boat and air brushing the hull on my Huntsman. Last 2 boats have been hand painted so not quite up to speed on the spray painting again yet.

The rear deck and engine house is now in place along with the dinghy, although not painted yet, the fresh water tank is on, the companion way and the engine room roof light, there is a 2" speaker under this for a Componant shop engine sound unit.

                                                  img_0442.jpg

The smallest non steam steam engine I have ever built, it sits on top of and drives the capstan and a warping drum, it is sitting on a 2 pence piece, not to be part of the capstan.

                                                  Regards to all.

                                                    Hi Eddie,

That's a great looking dinghy, and the tiny steam engine , but where would the boiler have been on the full-size vessel ?? Fishing boats are great because of all the sundry gear & bits & Bob's 😀

                                                    Regards Ray

The deck makes sense now the extra strips have been added!
