Shall I add my Puffer to the club? Perhaps there should be a new forum heading just for puffers.

          Hi One & All

Hi Stephen and welcome, looking forward to seeing your Puffer.

I have now finished planking the fordeck, and moved onto the steam winch, having looked at photos of the winch, i feel that for me it is going to take some time to make one from scratch, so a quick look around google I found one at a scale of 00 from langley models of Crawley so I am going to give that a try.

Hi Fred, Jim & all other Puffers

Mine is “Snowflake” , built 1893 as Maid of Lorn, sold 12m later to a company in Cornwall. She wasn’t suitable for their needs so was sold again 12m later to the Irwin family in Combe Martin, North Devon. She then spent the next 50 years or so working around the Bristol Channel. She ended up in the Mediterranean in the late 40s. My wife’s grandfather crewed on her part of the time which is how she (my wife) came to be in Ilfracombe where I grew up. I couldn’t find any drawings so I bought a 1/24th hull from Orion Mouldings & I have several photos so I am working with them. I’ve just finished the rudder.P1040212

The tiller arrangement is the same as on my Rother lifeboat & will have a grating over it. I suppose I could put dummy chains on it.

              A nice tidy job Stephen,

Yours is a simpler version than my attempt and looks to be more accurate at the top of the post than mine will be. Always interesting to see how others do things. Thanks for posting,

              Jim.

That’s strange, last night when I did the post there were 2 pictures, the 2nd one looking down from above the tiller.

                  Hi Stephen

Now that is how you do a rudder, if I may I would like to use your way for when I do my other Puffer,

I am looking forward to seeing more photos of you build.

                      Good Day to you All

So today the steam winch kit from Langley Models dropped through the letter box, I must say it does look good,_DSC4408

                        Hi Fred,

That should make into a nice little steam winch I should think. I’ve been looking at one myself in 1/24 scale made by a firm called Battlecraft. They do complete deck fitting kits for a Puffer, which is tempting , but I’ll try and make things first, unless it’s a bit too fiddly.

                        Jim.

                            Hi

Jim yes I have been looking at Battlecraft fittings myself, as I have two guns that I got from wayback when they was called Fine cast models (I think that’s what they were called) and very good they are, so I may use them when I start my 1/24 Puffer.

Colin I would have used Brian but he did not have one small enough for this model, I have one on one of my other boats, and they are also very good.

I have now finished the winch, just need to paint it and add some weathering.

That’s made into a nice little winch. I’ve ordered one in 1/24 from Battlecraft and am just waiting for it to arrive sometime. Your Puffer is certainly coming along nicely.

Please do post some photos of you boat, as I said I still have one myself to build, I am going to base mine on the Inchcolm as she has an open wheelhouse, that way I think I can add a bit of atmosphere to the boat.

                                      Hi Fred,

I shall post pictures as I go along. Things are a bit slow at the moment as the garage gets cold in the evenings just now and also, with Christmas round the corner, things need to be done, as we all know!

Looking forward to seeing how your wheelhouse turns out. I’ll certainly be different.

                                      Regards,

                                      Jim.

Jim, tell me about winter in the garage/workshop, this is why I am doing this Puffer, it is small enough for me to work on in the 2×2 feet space that I have in the house.

This is my attempt at wreathing the steam winch; all I have done is wet the winch and placed some fine steel wool onto it and left it over night, I will in time spray it with some matt varnish.   _DSC4414_DSC4415

                                                Hi Mike

Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year

My problem is that I have Sleep Apnea, so when I can not sleep I do some modeling, but one of the drawbacks is that I will full asleep in the day, so most of my builds take a long time.

As I am doing an open wheelhouse I felt that some form of duck board should be in place, just to keep the skipper’s feet dry, I also tried out some wheelhouse fittings just to see how it will look.

Putting me to shame Fred with your progress. I’ve just ordered some different chain to chain drive the rudder. I found some pulleys that came with a servo set  so I’m hopeful I can make use of them as chain guides. For some reason I’ve struggled to get my head round how I want it all to work , but hopefully when the chain arrives a solution will come to light.
