You may have overdone the sanding there, Bob.

            Hi Bob,

I like the darker color green in your photoshop examples, also the darker cream stands out more if you'd ask me.

Please DO sand the hull better, though. The blemishes are all too visible now, it actually makes the boat look like a very, VERY badly done fiberglass one. I think you can do better than that.

I know that Bob knows that the hull is a bit rough and could do with a bit of sanding, but he is happy for the moment and that's ok.
The point here is that Bob KNOWS it needs sanding but is prepared to leave it for a bit.

How many models have I seen where the owner has not sanded their bits sufficiently, and the finish is substandard, but either the owner does not care or just does not see it as substandard.

I can`t claim to be a perfectionist, but a few more minutes with a bit of wet`n`dry or sandpaper is all it takes to get a reasonable finish as opposed to a horrid surface that most people would look at with distain.

I saw a German battleship of some description (somewhere shall remain nameless) that the owner had built plank-on-frame, and had purchased and /or made all the detail bits and it looked quite nice. BUT when you looked at the hull….all the planks were still visible !!!! ???? 20 mins sanding was all it would have taken.

The thing is,,,do you tell someone to get the sandpaper out….can you do it on the forum ? or do people get the hump?? Like Bob, I know what's wrong with my models and don't mind constructive criticism.

You have put the situation in perspective

Can you imagine, if a person, looking at a newly posted model, decides to draw attention to the paint finish?

It`s the height of bad manners and would certainly cause offence

I can always retrace my steps, when the paint has hardened off where the potholes and defects will stand out more clearly, after sanding

There`s plenty of more interesting work yet to be done

                  Bob

                    Hello Captain

Can you imagine, if a person, looking at a newly posted model, decides to draw attention to the paint finish?

Maybe the members cant understand why you, as an highly skilled model boat builder have decided to work out of the traditional sequence. You have in the past expressed your willingness to accept constructive criticism and this certainly falls into the category of constructive criticism.

For those of us who might be new to this sanding/painting lark it might be an idea to explain your thought processes, I can understand using paint to show up any imperfections before a final rub down and I took your painting to be a variation of this process.

Thank you, Paul, for suggesting I`d got a cunning plan for the painting process!

There`s nothing scientific in the process at all!

If you remember, I started painting the hull, just before the Haydock show and wanted to be sure of the colour scheme and imagined, I`d need a few gallons of paint!

                      That`s all

                      Ha! Ha!

And besides………You know the real reason!………More laughs

Tho trouble is, if no one draws attention to the unsatisfactory finish in anyone's boat, then the owner/newbie/whatever may be under the impression that they have achieved a satisfactory finish? Certainly I have seen some efforts on the forum and everyone says "yes that's nice/great first time build/like the thingybob at the rear" etc etc and what we should be saying is….yes good effort BUT….or how else is anyone to learn?

So folks lets wait for the finished article ,it will be a successwink Michael

That`s very kind of you to say that, but I don`t really finish to such a great finish as you suggest?

I think the finished article may give that illusion?

Did you get to Haydock this year?

                              Hi

The original boat may be was painted with a brush as the full size boats were and as finishing a working boat to mirror show room misses the point .

A bit of rough adds a bit of real life to a boat.

Varnished the top cabin and is quite nice

Still not got any brass wire for the handrails………A treat, yet to come
