Getting wood to bend to the shape you want can be a pain sometimes, here are the types I have found work the best.
Lime is one of the best, it has a nice tight grain is not too soft and when soaked will bend very nicely. Many moons ago I built some paddle wheels from Lime which I managed to bend in a full circle!
Obechi is a very soft wood but will bend even sideways without wetting usually, ideal for handrails but needs support between fixings, also takes a wood stain really well.
The usual hardwoods, Teak, Mahogany,Walnut etc, will all need soaking or steaming to bend well without splitting.
Pine is only good when used in a straight run, it will bend in a gentle curve but is has a very large grain which can be hard and soft across it which can make it splinter easily depending how much you stress it.
Balsa is everybody’s favourite, it bends well (although you do have to be gentle) cuts well, takes a Stain very well what’s not to love! Although classified as a hard wood is very soft, great to work with but not to good to bash against a jetty. A good dose of varnish will stiffen it up though.
Hope this waffle is useful to somebody.
