Hi Ashley. I will definitely finish it. I miss out on a race because I do not have one.

But I know what you mean 🤗

Lovely morning at the pond yesterday, after the wind and rain on Saturday.

Had the carpet carrier and Hobbies Hydro out. A man said I should try a multi blade prop on the Hydro to lose the torque roll (he was an off shore wind farm man!) but I said it had to have 2 blades as that’s what Hobbies specified and I built it to the drawing (if a bit bigger) HOWEVER as the thing as been outed I could try other props.

But recent experience has shown that the rated power of the motor is only realised by loading it up properly and I am limited to a 7 inch prop and having the prop next to the pylon (as per design). I can’t even manage to put a 7×5 on it (it has a 7×3).

The search is on for a prop adaptor with a thread long enough to put TWO props on, as I need a 4 blade prop for the Wally to look right and load the motor up. I got one for the Farnham but it was loose in the parts bin at Addlestone models and make is unknown. It is the wrong size for the Walrus motor. Two would be handy then I could move the Hobbies prop further away from the pylon to increase efficiency and reduce noise. 3.17 mm needed.

I had one of those annoying moments during my JIF build. Bearing in mind i do not make a lot of boats and usually play with metal, i forgot how important it is to select good wood. I built the frame up and started putting the sheeting on one evening. In the morning this had happened. Luckily is was still on the building board so with a bit of careful cutting with the razor saw and knife i managed to remove the whole length and replace it.

Ahh Brian, if in doubt a quick warm water bath usually does the trick. Always check the wood for odd graining or knots, been caught out myself with that one.

Yes very annoying. Hot air gun and water handy for “on the spot “ bending at well.

Getting wood to bend to the shape you want can be a pain sometimes, here are the types I have found work the best.

Lime is one of the best, it has a nice tight grain is not too soft and when soaked will bend very nicely. Many moons ago I built some paddle wheels from Lime which I managed to bend in a full circle!

Obechi is a very soft wood but will bend even sideways without wetting usually, ideal for handrails but needs support between fixings, also takes a wood stain really well.

The usual hardwoods, Teak, Mahogany,Walnut etc, will all need soaking or steaming to bend well without splitting.

Pine is only good when used in a straight run, it will bend in a gentle curve but is has a very large grain which can be hard and soft across it which can make it splinter easily depending how much you stress it.

Balsa is everybody’s favourite, it bends well (although you do have to be gentle) cuts well, takes a Stain very well what’s not to love! Although classified as a hard wood is very soft, great to work with but not to good to bash against a jetty. A good dose of varnish will stiffen it up though.

Hope this waffle is useful to somebody.

This morning was unexpectedly sunny, calm and dry, so I took the new 1/8 Scale [34.5"] Huntress to Papplewick and threw it into the pond. To say I was pleased with its performance is an understatement! There's something uniquely beautiful about the way these Fairey powerboats look at full-power on the water – just drop-dead gorgeous.

I intend to deliver the finished model to the SLEC stand at the Warwick/Leamington boat show this weekend , so keep an eye out for it. The kit should be ready in time for this year's seasonal festivities but I've no idea of the price yet.

my Templar caravel is coming along nicely, masts and rigging are in and have made patterns for the sails. Lots to do still but I’m hoping to try it out before the pond freezes up, been lucky wit this in previous years but you never know.

                            Hi Ashley,

It's been a while since I was able to indulge in my favourite hobby but finally the surgery is over and I am now halfway through my 6 week recovery period, so I am still not allowed to do much.

Read your last post with interest as I built a flying R/C Walrus many moons ago before my return to boats. I fitted 2 x 2 bladed props to my model, removing a little bit of the round hub so they slotted into each other by 1/16th inch. As I cannot get my head around my larger projects at the mo, I would be happy to turn you up a couple of prop adapters. PM me with exactly what you need and I will machine some for you.

                            Cheers….Ron Rees.

Good session Sunday. Only bugbear was the that the wind and rain had blown all the leaves off the teees and into the pond where they were floating nicely. This stopped fast boating for a while but unlike weed, did not lead to any strandings

usualdrama..burnt out motor, slipping coupling, broken coupling, batteries dying mid pond (not affecting MY boats, obv).

Good turnout. Woody rower and paddler unaffected by leaves. My choice of LCT also a good’un As it has three props and rudders giving some redundancy for fouling.

Trevors new yellow peril showing promise apart from slipping coupling and the leaf issue.

My ex Foam Flyer Ecranoplan burnt out the motor, and Noel wasn’t even on half throttle(?).

Odd morning for me Bushy yesterday.

                                        • Lots of dogs not on leads running amok
                                        • Member of public trying to feed a young stag, got tussled with. Not that funny, created a minor scene.
                                        • Too much leaf litter on water aa noted above. Without any wind to disperse it was a hazard to most craft.
                                        • Satan's tooth pick nearly speared a duck, very near miss. Sorry duck. Lesson there on not using Tx box with reversed throttle, very confusing to the young pilot. Fixed that now.
                                        • Satan's tooth pick crashed hard into concrete jetty. Same lesson learned as above. Vessel survived though, congrats to the designer and conclusive proof that building everything triangular makes for strength!
                                        • Then the Ekranoplan melted its motor for no apparent reason, which was a shame as it was the only leaf-proof craft I had!

Yes, an odd morning. Missed Andy as had to go to swimming lesson, which was a lot calmer!
There was one new boater to Bushy yesterday with his son and a nice classic speedboat/launch kit that he'd freshly built, but that suffered with the leaves same as everything else.

Ashley what motor was it you recommended for the Ekranoplan please?
It was on a 3S pack, but as you no obvious reason and I hadn't been anywhere near full pelt.

                                        Noel.

Noel. I had a 3700Kv park in runner in my ecranoplan. I would be tempted to put a 2200Kv Turnigy or similar outrunner in yours. This will turn a bit bigger or course pitched prop, or even a multi blade one, which in theory will diminish the torque effect. I have some great 6 bladed props!

As I as making mine to be as scale as poss I had to use a thin motor, hence the choice and these only come in very high Kev ratings as they are supposed to used with geared units, or the very small prop. Mine works best on a 5.5×3 prop which is small and very low pitch.

The cover is just card and will/should come off with little damage using a craft knife. You will have to asses the motor bracket to see if a 28mm motor will fit. Alternatively there are 22 or 24mm motors out there?

have stuck the top wing on the Walrus and all of a sudden the thing now looks in proportion! However the motor refused to work until I changed the esc…whew!…access to the motor would have meant surgery and undoing lots of sanding filling and painting.

Now follows a long stint painting. Two colours for camouflage and a pale green for the sides. I need to sit it in the water now to see where the floats need to be set. May pop to t park tomorrow am for a quick dunk

Noel, Satan’s toothpick name seems to have stuck, sorry my fault, Maybe we could re name it the black duck worrier or Duckula.

The Templar ship had it’s first wetting last week, all was not as expected, the rear sail was acting like a big air rudder so all it did was head up into wind and when I forced it side on to the wind it sailed sideways. I’m in the process of making a bigger mainsail and have furled the aft sail so we will see what happens then.

Ashley has given me some Templar figures which will be spot on, thanks mate.

Looks like the JP esc is not working as bench tested it against another JP esc and it does not want to know. It bleeps the motor but emits single repeated tones indicating its not seeing the throttle properly? Tried using the program card but no joy.

Motor taking 167 Watts as seen by my watt meter on 3s Lipo, but think the 18A draw may be too much for sustained running at least on the twin prop setup, but boy…does it pull! 122 watts shown with single 7×5 on 3s.

Now into the tedious painting section of any build, flat brush, multiple coats and touching up.

Still not finished the JIF, i made the rudder and added the shaft to it, i used some 2mm SLEC control wire which i thought was 2mm but ended up being 1.7mm so it was a bit sloppy in the stern tube, doh!!!

I have made another one tonight but its will not be ready for tomorrow. They must roll a 2mm thread onto the shaft which brings the o/d up to 2mm.

I have used some Synthetic paint from Aldi which is a great primer builder. Cheap too.

                                                    Yes, looking good Brian.

2mm and 1.7mm…hmmm… when I made all those landing craft for our DxDay event I used those cheap 2mm propshaft/prop assemblies for economy, and they worked ok considering how cheap they are. But, the shafts rust over time without regular cleaning and degreasing, so I thought I would replace them with stainless. 50 cycle spokes St/st in 2mm later and we discover the shafts and props are 1.7mm…why are they sold as 2mm??

Fancy being so stupid as to naively believe 2mm shafts we’re actually 2mm!

I have since replaced the tubes with “fine line” ones in a 4mm shaft and they are not much different in size. Made such a difference finally having some reverse power with the pitchier 2 blade props.

Hi Ashley, thanks for motor suggestions earlier.

Size of motor mount on the Ekranoplan means a 2200kv outrunner might be a tight fit. Most 2200 outrunner seem to be about 28mm diameter and that will be tight, especially with the wires that usually come of the front mounting bit.

I found a 2600kv 380 can size inrunner, which looks like it will be a good fit as its 28mm.

Specs say it will turn an 8×3.8 prop. Appears to be fan cooled as well.

                                                      Looks a good option
