Good boating Sunday. Bright, but got a bot chilly later on.
Took the Zis and BHA flying boat.
Noel surprised everyone (including himself) by debuting the "Blackbird" fast stealth three point hydro wotsit he tried last week, only this time it has a lid on it and has been painted pink black. Impressed. Massively fast and despite some predictions that it would not rise at the back with the thin v shaped rear hull, a change to a hydro prop means the boat sits on the prop. Nice one Noel.
A lady stopped to ask if all the boats were skillfully hand made by discerning craftsmen as in evidence at the jetty (no) and asked if we took commissions!!!! When pressed regarding likely cost I pointed to the Zis and said that (as its only a plywood thing) it might only cost £30 for materials BUT another probably minimum £100 for gear including radio/battery, assuming you didn't have these items. She was after a narrow boat for her father, like he used to own.
BUT thinking about it, it seems a bit risky. Granted any of us might be able to knock up a hull and superstructure, painted for £30 (just go with it), for the total outlay of £130 the lady would be getting a very basic boat, and would this provide customer satisfaction for that amount of money??? Likely not, as she is viewing boats at the pondside that have had many hours spent on them. Unfortunately all the little extras that would make it a NICE boat would cost. And that is disregarding costs for our time.
Then there is the time. Knocking up a boat in the summer, in the garden when the glue dries quickly is one thing, spending hours fiddling with detail is another, and I have enough to do without extra fiddling!
