Yes, unexpected break in the weather brought us all out!

woody rowboat is in dock at the moment after the hull sprung a leak, must be something to do with Stinky Pete!

Noel’s stealth/hydroplane went well but is going to have to be sealed up well + some work to do to trim it up. Will look menacing when finished.

My only contribution was the Gull which loves a good breeze and was decks awash a few times,Happy days!

Deck now covered. Very thin balsa so light but have to be careful with it! Was as noted a big risk running without a lid but at least i now know it generally works ok and doesnt need any structural changes. Was useful to find where the battery is best sited too for trim, as i was originally going to mount it aft. Which would probably have sunk it!

Noel. It would be interesting if you could stick to the triangular theme incl. the pontoons? It did look very good I must say.

After months of faffing about have started on project W. It’s a Walrus amphibian, no secret on this one. The bha body looked so very walrussy that I thought I would have a go. Non flying of course, but want to get that “fast take off” run look this time As it only has one motor I can use a brushless one for oomph, but mounting it , and indeed making, the egg it sits on/in has yet to be worked out.

Have drawn to scale a side view, from a small line drawing, and have then simplified and altered the drawing to make it fit for purpose..

wings will be about 25mm thick in one piece from styrofoam. The 4d model shop now supplies the thicker foam (20mm up) in a slightly less dense grey material, rather than the light blue stuff. Ideal for wot I want.

So…sides have been cut out and reinforcing balsa is in the process of being stuck in place.

Tomorrow???? Who knows. It’s a bit wet at the moment.

Dry now if a bit grey, but very mild. I think I will risk a carrier…unless it starts raining in the next hour.

            workshop always open for visits!

Otherwise will get on with wally.

Trevor came round last Sunday and we had, as usual, a very fruitful discussion regarding our various projects. Its amazing what can come out of these "no idea too daft" conflabs.

Walrus main body constructed, removable cabin section made, tail made…servo and flexi line in place.

Tricky stuff next, making the wings. Motor ordered, prop ideas gathered. No idea yet how to mount motor.

Tomorrow… BHA, Terrapin and a lander assuming it is dry…

Good boating Sunday. Bright, but got a bot chilly later on.

Took the Zis and BHA flying boat.

Noel surprised everyone (including himself) by debuting the "Blackbird" fast stealth three point hydro wotsit he tried last week, only this time it has a lid on it and has been painted pink black. Impressed. Massively fast and despite some predictions that it would not rise at the back with the thin v shaped rear hull, a change to a hydro prop means the boat sits on the prop. Nice one Noel.

A lady stopped to ask if all the boats were skillfully hand made by discerning craftsmen as in evidence at the jetty (no) and asked if we took commissions!!!! When pressed regarding likely cost I pointed to the Zis and said that (as its only a plywood thing) it might only cost £30 for materials BUT another probably minimum £100 for gear including radio/battery, assuming you didn't have these items. She was after a narrow boat for her father, like he used to own.

BUT thinking about it, it seems a bit risky. Granted any of us might be able to knock up a hull and superstructure, painted for £30 (just go with it), for the total outlay of £130 the lady would be getting a very basic boat, and would this provide customer satisfaction for that amount of money??? Likely not, as she is viewing boats at the pondside that have had many hours spent on them. Unfortunately all the little extras that would make it a NICE boat would cost. And that is disregarding costs for our time.

Then there is the time. Knocking up a boat in the summer, in the garden when the glue dries quickly is one thing, spending hours fiddling with detail is another, and I have enough to do without extra fiddling!

You're dead right Ashley, and being as it's for her father and he owned one he'd probably wouldn't be very happy unless it was top notch.

I'm going to build one for my sister at some point as she's got a narrow boat and is in to dolls houses so it's going to have to be good and cost a few bob even excluding my time.

Hate to think how much my builds add up to (and not bothered within reason, it's a hobby) and I've still got expenditure to come for painting, detailing, ESC, battery etc. Got to be in the hundreds of pounds.

It's the sort of thing you'd only really want to do for family and friends.

I’ve been asked if I would build a boat for somebody and like you both said it’s the time and cost you have to put in. It ends up as a job and after 40 years of working this is my time to do my stuff, also if when finished they don’t like it then your stuck with something you didn’t want to make in the first place.

Noel’s Blackbird hydro was unexpectedly impressive , I think even he was surprised! Just goes to show things you think are going to work well don’t and sometimes stuff you build as an experiment can surprise you.

my one was the Woody rowboat, from the off he worked well and the mechanism was an experiment cobbled together with Lego!

I was indeed surprised by the performance of the Black Bird! The big Overlander Hurricane 650 and a 39mm hydro prop gave good performance on a 2S lipo pack. It was quick but controllable by a 7 year old. On 3S it was hilariously fast with the hull totally clear and fully riding on the prop. Warmth of motor and ESC not a problem so no need for any ventilation or water cooling, which is very pleasing and suggests a slightly larger prop could be tolerated for even more speed.
Only minor concern is roll stability – there was noticeable torque roll when applying full power from rest, and when it bounced along over any wavelets it looked like any big course changes might need to be handled sympathetically. Wider spacing of the sponsons will help that I guess. Thanks for the kind comments, and as noted it was not bad for a first go at a hydroplane that was designed using a degree of educated guessing!

                            Hi Lads

Bearing up to the weather, looks like a bit of English summer for Saturday.

A few new members into the club in the last few months with a good range of craft from a Dumas PT109 with a 1000kv brushless, fishing boat, cabin cruiser, a crack box speed boat and a few tugs.

Very sorry to all the scratch builders in the forum.

I have moved over to the dark side and bought a kit boat !!!!!

Well the price was too cheap.

                            $1200au kit for $265au and it's a Krick kit .

Who can first guess which one???

Harry. Buying a kit is the first reason to ban you from Todays boating, the second of course is your penchant for cheering us up with TAZ weather reports!!!!

Thanks for that snapshot of terrible weather wot you have down under. It is getting steadily more chilly and damp. We can only dream of 15 degrees….

No idea what kit….could be anything….please tell me its the sub????

$A1200 equates to about £630 Sterling. The only Krick kits I can find that are anywhere near that price are the Antares yacht and the HE4 Police Boat. If you got either of those for £140 then you really did find a bargain.

                                  Do tell….

Not a yacht or Police Boat and not in production, but in production in a smaller size.

                                    The $265 included freight of $65 !!!!

So ewe can sea to move to the dark side.

Looking at an Eileen fishing boat started kit tomorrow, but that for a club member.

BGood boating on Sunday last. Had Argus (only as had another brass band job at Guildford cathedral in afternoon)

paddler, woody rower, indian squaw rower, bean tin jet boat. Usual mix!

Tricky bit on Walrus now. Motor mount surprisingly easily made and fixed in place, but now have to make the egg shaped cowl that goes in front of it. Obvious issue is that the supporting legs are in the way of simply making a sleeve for the mount. I have several ideas..none very simple or easy..

Will test boat-with a Turnigy 28mm outrunner of 1450 Kv, will be on 2s Lipo. 160 watts.

Same motor powers Farnham turning two 7×5 props and copes ok. A 1300 kv Overlander  of 200 watt waits in background OR I could up the ante ditching the 4 blade prop for a two blade one and pop a 340 watt 2200 kv Turnigy in there! Or er.

I have had a novel idea on how to make the “egg” cowling, an it involves gluing styrofoam together with PVA, turning it, then soaking in water to disassemble afterwards!

It’s basically a two channel set with two extra functions, could be very useful?

it has the same handset as my Saturn sets but with different logos, it’s only two channels but with two switchable functions a three position switch and a rotary switch. At £39.90 it was worth a punt.

It’s basically a two channel set with two extra functions, could be very useful?

Cracking on with the JIF build and soon be on the water. Df65 that I bought goes well however I am still at the back of the flotilla. Its only early days yet though.

Richard. Was thinking of this, like the rotary knob thingy. be interested to see how yours goes.

Harry you have it so hard over there. It is blowing up here (sat) so who knows what tomorrow will be like for boating.

Brian that looks nice. Sometimes you get on with something and it gets to the all-wood stage, all sanded and smooth and it then seems a shame to paint it. Have been using Gorilla non-foaming glue lately, and although it sticks ok, it is like using epoxy but it does not go hard and is thus difficult to sand flat…

First go at Walrus engine cowl didn't go well, so more foam has been stuck to the wood former for another go. If all else fails I can clad the motor box with foam and hand carve/sand the egg but it will never be as even as using the lathe. BUT the fake rotary engine looks great!! Wires connected now, and in a short while I will give it a test to make sure all is well. Once the top wing is on there will be little, or at least, difficulty access, to change stuff about.

                                                      Ashley
