Hi Ray, I agree, very nice and an unusual shape to the hull, at least to me, I like your idea of the 1/32" ply strips on your cradle, another one for me to pinch/borrow!

        Regards

        Eddie.

          Hi Tom

Thanks for the photo, that's exactly the type of model we are aiming to create, great colour schemes, every surface painted to protect from the sun, not an issue in this country ! we are back out in Spain in June

          Regards Ray

            sfb120318 005.jpgsfb120318 002.jpgHi All,

Major milestone achieved this weekend as the weather not conducive to much else, deck and access hatches made and fitted, deck from 1/32" ply with planks formed on the surface with 3 pass's of a metal working scriber, just enough to show the inner lamination, but as the decks will be painted should break up the look, sanding sealer next, painted the bilges gold very posh !sfb120318 004.jpg. The front bulkwarks not too clever as I used soft balsa block hollowed out and filled, just the superstructure, winch, trawling gallows and fittings to get on with

Eddie the stand now has it's felt lining

            Regards Ray

There's a lot of thought and work gone into that decking etc.It looks good, a very 'pretty' hull even though it's a working boat, the full size that is. I have just made the stand for the pond yacht, I will finish it as you have done, I will also fit out the stand for Ardent, as your idea will spread the load across the hull instead of all the weight resting on the thin sides of the stand.

              Regards.

              Eddie.

                Looking good Ray.

I like your method for the planking on the deck. I shall have to give that a go at some time.

Good to hear from you, yes I maybe enjoying this one and it was supposed to be built for my wife, I keep forgetting it's not a race ! not many straight lines on this one have you got another mammoth project in the planning stage ??

                        Hi All

On with the deckhouse lower section 1/16" ply which fits over the ply upstand, with Aldi fibre washers for portlights. The bridge will be the next unit to build, and loads of window openings and frames to cut. Waterline marked to ensure superstructure is plumb.

                          Hi All

The SFB has had a break in construction for a few weeks, good to change projects occasionally, now we are sporting a small funnel and the trawling gallows at the stern, next big project is the winch

Cheap £5.00 kites from ALDI great source of GRP/Carbon rods for masts etc

Glad your enjoying your fishing boat and a nice touch about naming after your wife not sure using her age will earn too many brownie points? Just contemplating the main winch build brass or wood what a dilemma

The main winch had been a major milestone in my mind, should I fabricate it in brass? but settled for wood as it only has to look right not actuallysfbjuly3winch.jpg work, so ply, dowel and balsa has done the job

Last pictures of SFB in the wood, primer spray cans at the ready, she has 2 coats of sanding sealer already,

Mrs Wood who commissioned the build is happy with it, but asked if it could be half that size!!

                                          Hi All

Just an update on the Fishing Boat for my wife, who has asked if it could be smaller!! Lesson learned on this balsa planked & block hull is do not rely on 4 coats of sanding sealer as a base for paint, It cracks & crazes like mad, I should have glass clothed the hull but as It's going to be an ornament most of the time I didn't bother ! lesson learned many more colours to go.

Hi. Ray, what a lovely boat, nice shape and colourful and just a hint of planking, you must be pleased with that, well donesmiley.

Do you think the acrylic paint attacked the sanding sealer or was there some solvent left from the sealer to attack the top coats?

I was thinking of using the same technique for the deck of my TSB but I will have to rethink that now.

                                              Hi Eddie

The sanding sealer cracked up before I sprayed the hull, I think too many coats was to blame, perhaps the clue is in the name ? I've never had a problem on plywood, Veronica's deck is only sprayed with grey primer, now 4 years on its beginning to wear slightly. PS booklet in the post this weekend

The fishing boats ply deck is fine only 2 coats.
