Yes Dave, Forums. Ask a question and get a dozen different answers. Some of them are even right! A bit like TripAdvisor sometimes, you have to go with your instinct.

Some forums are notably less reliable than others – as indeed are some contributors. I've got a little list.
I make absolutely no apologies for repeating these Internet Forum rules, which are also posted elsewhere. I hope they raise a few smiles as well as eyebrows… I do apologise for contravening Rule #9 though!

          1. Never give your age or location in your profile
          2. Adopting an avatar which is already in use by someone else will save you having to think of one for yourself. Try also to choose one which moves or flashes; they’re so amusing.
          3. Always post on a non-specific board, particularly if your question is of a highly technical nature.
          4. A title which actually explains your question is a waste of time; nobody reads those. Instead use a phrase which conjures up curiosity e.g. “Help needed”.
          5. Typing in capital letters throughout will make your question stand out for those who have poor eyesight.
          6. Never use a spell checker. You’re not helping the language evolve by doing that.
          7. Punctuation is for pussies. A ‘stream of consciousness’ approach is far more interesting.
          8. Capital letters for proper names is also optional; e.g. we don’t mind whether you ‘help your Uncle Jack off his horse’ or ‘help your uncle jack off his horse’.
          9. Try to move discussion away from the original topic as quickly as possible.
          10. Never, ever give a direct answer to a simple question e.g. “Which Brand X speed controller should I use?” should be answered “I use Brand Y”. Questions like this are also an invitation to give a lengthy discourse on the entire subject, irrespective of whether or not you know anything about it.
          11. Never read any posts in a thread apart from the original and the most recent.
          12. If you do read any other posts then copying someone else’s reply and re-posting it yourself will emphasise to others what a good answer you think it is.
          13. Give only the absolute minimum of detail about the model in question. Specifics such as its name, size, type, number of motors etc will only clutter up the posting.
          14. You can avoid the software’s rude-word editing function by substituting numbers for letters e.g. 0 = o and 8 = B. Unfortunately there are no usable substitutes for F or T.
          15. This country has laws permitting freedom of expression so you can post anything you like on an Internet forum with total impunity.
          16. The use of “textspeak” will show everyone how young and groovy UR.
          17. It is forbidden to thank anyone for a helpful reply; only cissies do things like that.
          18. Never post requests for copies of instructions; real men throw those away because they don’t need them.
          19. If you are required to make a minimum of posts before you can access certain privileges (e.g. a sales board) then make up the number with helpful comments such as “Nice finish, dude” and “I have one of those, too”.
          20. Ignore any reference to Forum Rules – they don’t apply to you… ;D

          Kevin

            Dave,

I'm not sure whether no 8 refers to an unmentionable procedure to Uncle's steed but I'll let it go this time.

As a relative newby it is nice to know that so far in my experience all appear to stick to the rules as stated.

Many thanks for clarifying and interpreting them so well Dave.

I wonder if I can ever achieve these standards

              Here's hoping

Colin: Please explain rule 8 and unmentionable procedures.

                      Happy New Year to everybody.

Not much progress to report but the wife has made the curtains!!

Bought a couple ESC's to get rid of points I had with Hobbyking and they have a "Brake function" that can be switched on and off with a jumper.

                      What is a brake function?

The wife took me to another antique shop last Tuesday and guess what I found? Yep, a model boat so invested another £25.

                      img_1082.jpg

It is a kit build and 26" long and I am sure somebody will recognise it. It will need a good fettling as the build isn't the best but given it has a motor, prop shaft, prop and rudder I was quite happy with the investment.
The motor works as I tested it with one of my 7.2v batteries but I will have to take it out to see what voltage it actually is.

I think that the brake function has the effect of slamming the motor into a very brief stall to halt a wheeled model quickly. It's not necessary for a boat, where a quick dab of reverse wouldn't strip the gearbox like it would on a car. My advice would be to switch it off.
Can't help with the boat ID – sorry. I'd like to spend some time looking but it's Friday afternoon again……;o)

                            Hello John

You are a lucky duck the model is a Wavemaster

Its a rare model to find these days and very collectable.

Dave would have identified it straight away if he wasn't so busy with his friend Jack wink

                              Thanks for the ID Paul.

Having looked it up and looking at the bulkhead numbering this is most likely a fairly recent model. The bulkheads look like those on "Smit", i.e laser cut me thinks, but I am still pleased with the purchase. The size and design will make it easy to transport and sail once I rebuild some areas of it and get some RC kit for it. Need another transmitter as well really as I only have the DX6i.

I have to ask "who is Jack?"

                              Cheers

                                John,

There is indeed a recent version of the Wavemaster available from (i.a.?) SLEC — see **LINK** — so if the one you found looks like it might be of recent vintage (laser cut parts etc.), I dare say it might be such a one …

I have to ask "who is Jack?"

It depends – there are many. The one often referred to in the context of my Friday afternoon practices has the surname of Daniels. There's Happy Jack, who wasn't old but he was a man and lived in the sand on the Isle of Man (according to The Who). There is yet another one who knows nothing but whose surname cannot be mentioned here. Have I got the right one yet? You tell me.

(You don't have to be mad to post things on this forum but if you make model boats then most people think you are anyway….)

                                        Hi,

I think your Wavemaster is probably an IP Engineering kit -of recent vintage. The original Wavemaster was a bigger boat at something like 33/34'' I think a new kit was produced for that too. They are lovely looking boats and you may know they were designed by Les Rowell in the 50's- the same man who designed the Aerokits range of boats and later on, the Lesro kits, such as Rapier, Sportsman etc.

                                        Have fun with it.

                                        Ian

                                          Thanks for the information Ian.

It will need a fair bit of work to get it tidied up as I think it has been assembled by "a young person". A lot of parts fit where they touch so some slicing and dicing will be required in between Ellie and the MTB.

Actually bought some primer today so am close to giving Ellie's hull a first coat and priming the cabin interiors temperatures permitting.
The curtain rails are giving me a bit of a headache but not as much as her indoors would give me if I didn't fit the curtains she made. I made it awkward fitting 4 opening windows to improve ventilation but I'm getting there slowly.

                                          Cheers

                                            You're welcome John,

I don't suppose your Wavemaster is any worse than my ebay rescue was. I got a bit carried away and paid a silly price for it -and little while later IP Engineering bought out their lovely laser cut kit. However she goes beautifully and brings much pleasure.

Ellie is also a fab little boat and reminds me of many craft I saw during twenty years of holidays in the Norfolk Broads- you choose well!

Looked at your link and yes my work is not that much.
I was also reminded of a boat called Broadland Widgeon but cannot remember which yard it was from.
We are booked on the broads again but doing a week in a cottage down there before collecting the boat.
Our bones and joints make us choosy about what boat we can manage but one thing is certain, it must have a bow thruster.

I am thinking of buying a couple of "cheap" ESC's and wondered if anybody had experience with them. There are plenty to choose from on eBay and I was thinking about 2 – 25A for the pair of JP POWER 400's I have fitted.

I was looking at the Mtronics Viper MP11 that is on special offer on eBay but I am not sure it would drive the motors hence looking at the cheapo's.

                                                  Cheers

Chinese amps are approx 1/5 as big as proper ones. Avoid, unless you simply like spending money.

MTroniks website doesn't show the MP11. These "named" types tend to be for one specific application/motor; this one looks like it might be limited to 11-turn motors. I wouldn't, but it's not down to me. Suit yourself.
