Hi sailors. We have seen hundreds of photos on all our boats and ships. How about posting photos of your workshops. It’s always interesting to see how you utilize your space and how neat some of them can be. I will post some of my workshop as well.
      Regards

We did have a thread like this before but sadly the owner of the thread did not post pictures of his workshop and we were very vocal on that omission…eh, (you know who you are) he is so NORTY.

I and several others posted pics. Some have HEATED and CARPETED rooms in which to construct, oooo   paddlewheelers and things (for instance) and so we dont mention them.

It is roumoured that our esteemed cyber controller also has a heater in his workshop. Enough said.

No doubt if you lead others will follow. or re-submit in my case..Mine is full of very large house spiders . I have to shoo them out before taking boats out to sail,as they get sea sick.

I do agree with Neil. Speaking to yourself in the workshop most probably will class you as insane. Looking for tools all the time was a problem I also had. I got some old stationary trays and sorted the tools into that. Problem solved. You just have to put them away when finished every day. Ashley I do envy some workshops. Specially the large ones with all the equipment not to mention carpets and heaters.

Peter I have noticed a lot off similar tools to what I have but most important a saw a speaker. Hope its not for the wife calling. I cannot operate with decent background music. As you say this is our places to find sanity amongst the every day madness

Arthur.. Here we have the crux of the matter….I do not see pictures of your workshop/build area/bedroom table/whatever yet..however humble…you will have to stand in the naughty corner soon.

Arthur, the speaker is definitely NOT for messages from my wife  In fact, it’s one of a pair of old computer speakers connected to a small radio tuned to a local station which plays music from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

B B thin ice my mate. Im currently out of town. Be back on saturday. I will post pics then. 3g internet card very slow. Think B B should post his first and we can compare. “Hint” i do have a carpet in my workshop LoL. Peter i must say i would love some old music. In South Africa we got 11 official languages. Man most of that you cannot listen to. I would rather post pics than standing in a corner but as in most of our shops there is no corners left.

I wished that person was a midget because then he would be able to clean under the workbenches. CARPETS in Workshops?????. By the way the Swarte Zee is about 1.3m long and weighs 15kg. It is small. LOL  How on earth do you get all the metal shavings out of the carpet fibers never mind the fine wood or plastic filings. No vacume cleaner can clean those up. Heater in my shop definately I am not one for the cold and it affects the bones where they were once broken. Music in a workshop is a definate and absolute must it just puts one in a good mood and frame of mind. I like the music from the 60’s through to the late 80’s after that there is an exception here and there.
I have not heard of anyone yet talk about lighting???? This is most important of all. Any one built a model in the dark? ( of course if you have lost the instructions or have no clue of what you want to do!)
Arch I still think you are fishing for Ideas.  Lola. See you if you get here!
I will post some pics later tonight.

Neil, I can relate to your scenario.  Yesterday I found a full sized circular saw I didn’t know I had (I bought another 18 months ago when I needed one).  I can see my lathe, just can’t get to it right now.  But I need to use it for work tomorrow, so the expedition begins.  I for one like to borrow an adage from office desks: cluttered bench = cluttered mind.  But empty desk = empty mind.  I know which I prefer.  B B, the wife’s Dyson got up the last of my turnings.  I’m safe so long as she doesn’t read modelboats forum! Mark.

Arther, Indeeed no naughty corner. Very nice. Unfortunately I have to share my bit of shed with storage for other stuff, gardening equipment, band equipment, spiders and so forth.

Usually a build means a good tidy up first to clear the decks. I do have a square of carpet to stand on, in fact, just to keep the tootsies a bit warmer! It is actually not quite so cramped as the picture shows.

Billy I know that senario from an untidy disorganised workshop. Mine was like that but since I had the entire workshop remodeled because of the new lathe i purchased. had no place to stand on. The disability payout from an insurance policy helped all the way that I had wanted for so many years suddenly were there and so total reorganising had to be done. My father stepped in and did all the cabinets and carpentary. WHAT STILL AMAZES ME IS what nice ships are stiill produced in such untidy workshops.

                                              Hi All

I am just starting out in the world of model building and am looking for a suitable build.  I have had a look at some of the pictures of members workshops and am now starting to worry I do not have the right stuff.  There seems to be an awful lot of large tools on various benches etc.  What are the bare neccesities that people think I might be able toget away with to start?  I have the usual drills and other hand tools etc but not any eletric saws, planes or a lathe.  My garage is still to be fitted out, will be done properly when we have the kitchen knocked through, when funds permit.

                                                Hi Andy,

I claim no expertise in workshops, but offer this insight.  My first model boat was scratch built on the floor of my student digs with a small range of hand tools, and I had a heap of fun building and sailing it.  Fancy equipment and setups give you more options, including some “better” ways to build perhaps, but I don’t think there is any minimum requirement.

My suggestion for starting out, for what it’s worth, is to begin with a good sturdy bench with good lighting, a cutting board and a small range of good quality hand tools.  If you want to invest in electric tools then a small pillar drill is essential for drilling precisely, neatly and perpendicular to the material.  This doesn’t have to be expensive, so long as there is no lateral play in the spindle and the spindle doesn’t wander when lowered and raised.  Others, with more experience, can advise on more advanced equipment.  I love using my lathe, but have yet to find an essential modelling use for it!

A good friend of mine once said to me, ” for every tool you see in my workshop, I have had to sacrifice something else so that I could buy the tool”. I find this statement very true if you think about it carefully. Those boaters just starting out DON’T be put off by the advanced workshops with lathes and other specialised tooling you see in the fotos. Boats can be built with some very basic tools and care and even then very good results can be achieved.

Things like Jewlers torches, milling machines and lathes are usually used by persons who at some stage in their lives have used these machines as part of their work. But even skills needed for these machines can be learnt from people in the know and you tube also has many good videos of how to use these machines and tools.

When you build your first boat go to a local club and there you will find many people willing to help and give advice.

I would add a small bandsaw as the second “big” tool” that anyone should have in a workshop.

My belt sander sees a lot of use after that.

I dont suppose we could agree (as a forum) on ANYTHING….sorry….on what one would or should have in a workshop, given funds of course. It also depends on what you like to make, and if you were to peruse 1950s copies of “Hobbies ” magazine, all you REALLY need is a coping saw and penknife!!!
