I'm building a Sarik Hobbies Wild Duck, and while it does come with plan, there are no further instructions. The Sarik website tells me that detailed instructions were in the July 2017 issue of Model Boats, but they don't have back numbers so far back.

Has anyone built a Wild Duck, or does anyone have a copy of the July 2017 number?

I'm fairly confident that I can build the boat without detailed instructions, but it would be nice to have them to check.

There is a US video of one build, but it really doesn't give much help.

          Hi Peter,

I have built one, it's my design

PM me your email address, I will scan the article on Monday when I'm in the office.

Have a look at the build thread for my version of the Y M Eventide, it's pretty similar in construction.

I watched the American guys Youtube video, he made it far to heavy  he used thicker ply than described, it's only a small boat.

          Regards Ray

              Hello,

I would like to share some pictures of my Wild Duck sailing in the shallow waters of Fluvià River, in Costa Brava.

20250216_12035920250216_12234020250216_22135620250216_12181820250216_12312620250216_123120(0) I like Icarex performance for an small sailboat like WD, but aesthetically Dacron fits better. My problem is that I don’t know were to find 2.2oz (or even lighter) dacron sailcloth in Barcelona.

              Can someone help me?

              Regards

              Joan Conesa

                  Hi Joan,

You have made a marvellous model of Wild Duck , I guess the keel is weighted but it really does need the fin and bulb to handle the breeze 🙂

My friend Tim Rowe in Mallorca has also built a Wild Duck the design is getting around 🙂

                  Regards  Ray

Beautiful, lovely model in a lovely setting and some great shots.  As Ray suggests she is more a fair weather model without the fin and bulb but within that limitation she looks beautiful.

                      Hi Ray and Richard,

                      Thanks for your comments.

I absolutely agree with you about the fin/bulb. It’s clear that without it, the wind range in which I can sail is very limited, and the boat more tender

I avoid fin/bulb for two reasons mainly: aesthetics for sure… but even to prevent the fin from snagging in a vegetated lake. This is important when sailing alone in a natural environment and without recovery equipment.

My first step to adapt my version off WD to the breeze was create a Nº2 rig an add a third small servo to control the jib sheet.

Now I have finished a sort of “Nº 3 storm rig” with orange jib 🙂 🙂 and I have also built a mould to cast an extra 380 grams of lead. This supplementary weight can be screwed to the keel via ruthex inserts.

At the moment I don’t have the opportunity to sail in these conditions, but when the day arrives I will share with you some pictures and comments.

In my opinion one of the most interesting aspects of our hobby and especially in RC sailing is the possibility of continous improvements and tests in our sailboat to adapt it to different sailing conditions, etc… For me this part of the hobby is fascinating.

Ray, I am very happy that your Wild Duck design is conquering the Mediterranean 😉

                      Regards

                      Joan Conesa

                        Hi Joan,

That’s a very good reason for not having the fin and bulb, as I sail with a club and have a small lake with a rescue dinghy , I’m sure you will find a solution and not have to go swimming 🙂

                        Best Regards from the UK

                        Ray
