I am hoping someone can help here. I want either a plan or a three view drawing of a ship. The ship was called the MV Gorgon. It is quite famous for being the last ship that sailed from Singapore on 11th February 1942 carrying refugees as the Japanese invaded and managed to evade the Japanese dive bombers. The ship was owned by Blue Funnel. It was built in 1933 and scrapped in 1964. It was generally used sailing between Singapore and Freemantle Australia. It has a sister ship called the MV Charon. I must admit I do have a personal connection here, as my Grandmother, Father and Aunt were all rescued on that night

I have looked for quite a time and can only find the odd photo here and there and was wondering if any of you could help or point me in the right direction please? I need the drawings to build a model of the ship. Or any decent photos would suffice. All the best Andy

I should add there is a book called the Model Shipwright number 140, which has some information as an article which is entitled "Modellers Draught MV Gorgon by J Pottinger". Without knowing what this is or contains I am a little apprehensive buying it at £50+, of course if anyone has a copy and could let me know or could copy that article it would be great. Of course I would cover your costs etc.

            Andrew,

There are about a dozen photos of Gorgon on this site: http://www.photoship.co.uk/Browse%20Ship%20Galleries/ but there is no search facility at the moment so you need to select the G folder and scroll down the list and click on the individual links. It should be possible to save the images one by one and copy them to your PC.

There are probably photos of Charon as well but I haven't looked.

              Hi Colin

Many thanks I have a few of these. Could J Pottinger be Jim Pottinger who has written articles for the magazine?

              Kind regards

              Andy

                Hi all

Just as an update, I did in fact get a plan/3view from Jim Pottinger (thanks Jim) and am in process of cutting out bulkheads and keel at present. Fairly easy build of hull as it has flat bottomed and sides. One thing I am stuck with is where to get ship air vents, this ship has plenty if you look at it and of various sizes, any ideas? Secondly looking at drawings the vents seem to point in various directions and various pictures I have seen of the ship the vents seem to be in different directions each time, therefore are these vents supposed to be movable? Lastly I really need a decent photo of the rear deck of the ship, which shows a superstructure however each photo I have is very crowded can anyone help?

                Thanks

                Andy

By 'air vents. I imagine you mean 'cowl vents'. If you Google this you will see lots of full size examples. They are readily available from model boating suppliers in different sizes. Some are expensive but you can also get cheaper plastic ones such as these from Reade Models **LINK**

Cornwall Model Boats also have a large selection: **LINK** just enter 'cowl' into the search box.

Although not always shown on the modelling examples, the vents often have an upper section which can be swivelled to catch the wind or not as required. Sometimes this is by means of handles mounted on the vent and sometimes there is a gearing mechanism which enables them to be turned from the accommodation below.

Obviously you can cut the vents down to size or make them taller by glueing a section of tubing on the bottom.

                  Hope this helps,

                  Colin
