      Nice boats Alex!
Did you do anything special regards ballasting etc?
I found on Jeanie Deans that a suspended keel was required……without it, it was wobbling about all over the place.
About 12 months ago another chap built Sandy Cousins Waverley and his unstable exploits appeared in Modelboats Mag.

        Hi Bob,

Ballasting in WAVERLEY was done by adding extra cells, she runs on 1.2V  10AH SAFT nicad cells at 12 volts,  and whilst they are expensive now, I bought them second hand from Northern Gas Board  in 1980 at 50p per cell, are they are still in good order to this day – wish I could get more at that price.

JEANIE DEANS has built in lead sheet, fibre glassed inside along the bottom and partly up the curve of the bilge and she also sails on a Saft nicad pack of 10 cells, to 12 volts.

My TALISMAN (Model Boats June 1982) has no ballast at all, but has a  deep draught out of scale.

Both paddlers and 3 later ones still to appear, use these nicads and controlled by Electronize speed controllers 43X.

All my paddlers (6 off)  have their draught increased for stability as it can get quite stormy on our lake at Tynemouth.

Alex…….with all your experience of building big boats, you`re the chap to ask!………..What motors would you recommend for my 7 foot Great Eastern model?

The prop is 3" dia 4 blade and the paddles are 7" dia by 1,6" wide

          Thank you…….Bob

            Hi Bob,

All my turbine models are triple screw and have only 1.5" to 2" propellers for all that they are over 7foot long.

And being a Scot I look for the cheapest motors to do the job which are Fiat fan blower motors (2 speed) from the scrap yard out of Uno or Panda. Ford fiesta blowers are quite powerful as well and I only pay about a fiver each.

But tomorrow when I’m at my boat club I’ll ask the boys who sail large models what they would recommend.

For my big paddlers I use a single 12 volt motor I got from Bull Electrical, I don’t know if they are still in business, and the smaller ones I use a single Delco motor (ex government surplus dated 1944 and cost 15 shillings!).

My big paddlers have wheels about the same diameter as yours.

Sorry I can’t be of any more help      Alex T.
