      Bob / Paul

I have drawings numbered 00 – 23. If that is all of them, then I am good to go, or should I say average to make a move ? The local blacksmith is coming to sharpen my tools so I will be able to start cutting very soon. I will endeavour to post some wip pics just to keep you all amused.. BTW, is Dulux any good to paint her with ? devil

Please excuse the slight mess in my workshop, the cleaner is on an extended break. I divorced her a couple of years ago and things have never been quite the same. You just can't get the staff these days.

Following the Ellie test runs with the Abell Twin drive, last week where the motor sound was most unusual, Lady Jane will be fitted with two such sets of Twin Drives…..Just for the hell of it!

            Bob….Back in the old routine

            Bob

I would hate to be rude in any way but I do think that this is a small improvement on the Abell drive units, possibly a bit more powerful too .

I am making amendments to the frame drawings and will issue the revisions later today….its nothing serious and the overall sizes don't change but you might wish to hold off on cutting until you receive the revisions.

Its nothing critical so there is no need to overreact (or over act)

All I have done is remove the optional Abell Drain and replaced them with stringer cut outs.

The original idea was to fit the keel stringers between the frames thus allowing the drain free passage down the length of the model but now having built the design prototype I have decided that this system is to complicated.

                            Hello Paul

If the propshaft is lower than the waterline, then I would suggest a purpose built watertight sump area below the dripping zone….

                            To contain the gunge

                            Very professional touch?

Don't think I like the Abell drain anyway…….Don't like the dregs slopping up and down the scuppers!

Got the wood this morning…..Six four x twos of ply and five 2 x 1's softwood….£20.00

                              Hello Bob

We could insert purpose built sumps but wouldn't a more professional touch be using decent non leaking prop shafts.

The wood sounds exceptionally good value, where did you get it from?

My last comment may sound like I pooh poohed your idea about a sump, I didn't mean to pooh pooh the notion as I simply wanted to explain that prevention is better than cure. Pooh pooh's are dangerous things and ignoring them is even worse.

You know, if there's one thing I've learnt from being in the building game, it's never ignore a pooh-pooh. I knew a site manager, who got pooh-poohed, made the mistake of ignoring the pooh-pooh. He pooh-poohed it! Fatal error! 'Cos it turned out all along that the Joiner who pooh-poohed him had been pooh-poohing a lot of other managers who pooh-poohed their pooh-poohs. In the end, the company went bust. Morale totally destroyed… by pooh-pooh!

I have been looking at the problem of getting two Abell drives into the VGC and with a little redesign of the base unit it would be possible to fit the twin 850s that you were talking about.

Hang on. Are you talking about two 850 motors in a three-foot boat – or four? Or is it still a five-foot boat? And does it have a single shaft or two? I'm becoming very confused by all of this persiflage. Please would you clarify things for me?

Got to confess chaps, that I am building the 5'-0" model of Lady Jane…..As you may have guessed, by trying to squeeze in FOUR MFA850 motors!

Paul, I didn't realise, Lady Jane was a tugboat?

At the moment, I'm just cutting out the keel and formers at a leisurely pace

The WIP model will be making an appearance at Haydock…….Along with the 3'-0" and 4'-0" versions

At the moment, we are debating whether to modernise the cabin structure, by having a sloping appearance?

                                        Hi Dave

I thought that you enjoyed the banter.wink 2

As you remembered I couldn't decide which size to design so I drew up 3ft, 4ft & 5ft versions, I have produced design prototypes in foam board for the 3ft & 4ft models and Bob is building a fully working 5ft model (which is actually 5ft 3in)

The 5ft version would be a good test bed for two Abell drives and I am currently designing the motor mounts to accommodate the aforementioned 850s ( 2 propshafts with two motors driving each shaft)

                                        Bob

I don't really want to redesign the cabin as I am trying to emulate the style of cruisers from the early 20th century (1910 > 1920) however there is scope in our ever increasing fleet to produce a 1930s style of river cruiser…..something art deco would look very nice positioned between Lady Jane and Ellie.

                                          That's got Dave confused!

When I suggested four 850's….I assumed a cavernous hull, but comparing the sample Abell drive with a large hull frame, there isn't much room to spare

Later, when the hull is taking shape, I'll make another mockup

                                          All good fun, hey?

Two of these in a vintage cruiser with oil drip trays and brass handrails would be rather interesting?

And two chunky home made drip proof propshafts too…..With obvious brass greasing pots….etc

I prefer the stand alone Abell drive unit, as it can be used in other boats sometime in the future

May fit Brutus with a bit of surgery?

Looking at Dave M`s motor list, the MFA850 produces 80 amps, but the 700`s are all over 100 amps

He is referring to "Speed" motors though

Aren`t choices a pain at times?
