        Hi, All

Made a little start on my Tyne class life boat, i have cut a few wooden frames for the plastic hull, i traced out the shapes and after cutting and sanding i have noticed there are some gaps between wood and hull.My question is, should i remake and be more careful or can the gaps be filled when i secure the frames in the hull.

        Cheers

        Tim

The question is whether the hull or the frames are correct! The important thing is that the deck fits OK! Is this wood?

It is quite possible that the curve of the plastic hull below deck level may have some minor gaps due to the manufacturing process. As long as things are OK at deck level then filling in small gaps below should be OK.

You don't want the hull to be too wide or too narrow at deck level as this will be more difficult to remedy and could affect the placing of above deck structures and fittings.

Colin, thanks for your response, the deck can be either , plastic or wood, i havent thought that far ahead yet, the pictures im using as inspiration shows the builder used all plastic !!, the only reason im going for wooden frames is purely because i think the hull can do with a little extra strength.i possibly could follow the builders idea of a plastic frame spanning across the hull and have no frames,

              Hi Tim

As per your other thread it sounds as though you have decided not to follow the designers instructions!

Fair enough that you have decided to add some timber frames but if these are not part of the design/plans how did you obtain the shapes?

How big are the gaps and are they symmetrical to both sides of the hull? If it was me I'd make some templates out of card first and once you've got a good fit then make them in timber.

By the way my Permagrit files arrived and I've given them a go. They certainly are good and make life much easier. Much better than wrapping sandpaper around bits of wood or using normal files.

Permagrit, way to go. Makes removing quantities of material easy.

I think that gaps can be filled, what you don't want is a tight fit, expanding or distorting the hull.
