shark used to be the staple fish in aussie chip shops in the 70's when i was over there……they called it "flake", and tasty in batter tbh meatier than normal fish……….a little like "john Dory" or monk fish, which i love

oysters taste like snott unless they are cooked……..and then they are nice, as are a speciality of the north west……"queenies"……..poached scallops

When I was a lad in Ilfracombe, dogfish was served in the chippies as "flake" or "rock salmon" or "huss", anything but dogfish which is of course a member of the shark family.

London's 'East end' was renown for 'Rock & Chips', spotted dog was so plentiful, & wages in those days, meant 'Rock' was a lot cheaper than cod or haddock.

When we treat ourselves at the local chippy we have a fish each, share a portion of chips and have a small pot of mushy peas for me. It used to cost bang on £11.00. Went for our usual a few days ago and it cost over £15.00. I really feel sorry for them because I know their ingredient costs are going through the roof but they are still going to loose customers who can no longer afford it.

We very seldom got those up north as they liked the warmer southern waters to breed and feed in.

The northern catches for white fish were haddock, cod and Hake with Fleetwood becoming the Premier Hake catching port in the British Isles and hake catches both out classed and out produced cod and haddock catches from the war time to the decline of our fishing fleets in the late 1970's and the 2nd Cod wars.

But going into a chippy only last night they had Hake on as a special….and so had one…………delicious.

2 Cod lots & a curry sauce £17-00 seems reasonable then.
