I recently purchased a TAYCOL double special motor on EBAY UK

The seller stated he had bought this motor when he was a teen ager in the 1970s but never got around to finish the boat he intended to install he motor. The motor is as new with the urigina box znd texhnical bullliten

I plan to install thew motor in the MARGARET, a 50 inch cabin cruiser designed by John L Langford which was built sometine in the 1960s or 1970s

The boat currently has a TAYCOL suermarine motor installed

I intend to add speed control as well as forward/reverse with the TAYCOL double special inatalled

I understans a TAYCOL double special is a are motor nand I am very happy to have found one which has never been used

How are you going to do the reversing? The Double Special, unlike the Supermarine, will take the Frary circuit as shown on the Taycol web site, which seems the best way to go…

But remember to lubricate the brushes before use!

Great motor, David. I have one in an Aerokits MTB and a Supermarine Special in an Aerokits Crash Tender, where it has been since I was 11, 52 years ago!

            Cheers,

            Martin

A Supermarine Special? Now that IS rare. The only rarer one I know of is the original 'Marine' …

That's what it said on the box, Dodgy. I remember being proud of having the Special as against the ordinary Supermarine.

You must have got one of the fairly early ones – I think they only came in around 1961/2, and were out by 1971/2 – perhaps earlier. I got a Standard at about the same time, and found it enthralling…

I was 11 when it came with the full Monty…Aerokits Crash Tender, REP single channel R/C, Ever Ready auxiliary actuator, full Mersey Marine fittings kit, brass prop. The lot. 1963 Christmas present.

I really MUST get round to finishing it off!

For more than six months I have been informa,,y tracking the sale of TAYCOL supermarine and double special electric motors on EBAY UK

There was one SUPERMARINE, one SINGLE SPECIAL (thats right a SINGLE SPECIAL and one DOUBLE SPECIAL which is the one I bought

these three motors all sold for less than 50 pounds,(perhaps the price of a low end RC controllr and receiver)

There is a nice older DOUBLE SPECIAL for ale right now on EBAY UK with a starting price of 28 pounds with no bids

I reading information on the internet it seemes there is a peerception these are scarce and valubale and hard to fibd

I think they are low priced and readily available

Auction house sellers will always 'talk up' the value for a sale.

Not many people want them these days unless they are into nostalgia projects. As said above, the Single Special does seem to be relatively rare.

As always, they fetch what people are prepared to pay.

As far as I know, there is no such thing as a 'Single Special'. Perhaps you mean a Supermarine Special?

There is a lot of mis-naming in Taycol adverts. I can't remember seeing an actual Supermarine Special for sale in the last several months, though there was a motor described as a 'Supermarine Double Special'.

The easiest way to recognise a 'Supermarine Special is to look at the face plate with the electrical connectors on it. The normal Supermarine has two electrical contacts for connecting to a battery – the Supermarine Special has three. I would not take the title of a Taycol motor given in the description as a reliable indicator of what the motor actually was…
