Suggestions for a non smelly finish, please.

With winter on its way, I want to finish a model indoors but it has to be a non smelly finish. I may be able to spray outside in the garden but the debris from surrounding trees etc. is a problem plus finding a suitable day this time of the year.

For waterproofing interior of hull I intend to use Ezecote, which I have used before.

For painting I would like to use water based acrylics. I have used Revell, Humbrol and Vellejo brushed on, in the past. I have used Valspa B&Q paint in the past also.

I think my problem is finding a primer and some kind of final coat to sufficiently waterproof the model. Ideally these would be brushed on indoors.

Can anyone recommend a non smelly finishing method or do you think I need to give up the idea and wait until next Spring /summer to paint/varnish outside?

I think for spraying outside it’s not just the debris that’s around, I get that in the Summer in my garden. It’s the temperature. I like to spray, either rattle cans or air brush, when the paint dries properly.

I spray hulls outside but brush paint decks, superstructure and fittings inside.

Someone may have a better answer.

        Tim

I use Rustins acrylic paint. Great fan of the grey undercoat and white primer/undercoat. However it’s difficult to get a smooth finish and it requires a but of work rubbing down…but no smell and easy brush/clothes/table cleanup.

Spraying….hhmm..its fast approaching the season of good luck finding a nice day….OR…I spray outside on a reasonable day and hustle the item/s into the shed quickly to dry…?

When spraying it is not only temperature that is a concern but humidity as well.  Best done indoors this time of year.

If you are using Ezecoat inside the hull why don’t you use it outside the hull as well?  Then you are not so reliant on the paint qualities to seal the hull.  A couple of coats of Ezecoat painted on then rubbed down and simple tins of enamel brush painted on will give a very durable finish with minimum smell.  If you want absolutely no smell then brush paint any acrylic paint on.  Solvent based acrylics tend to be more resilient and water based acrylics can loosen after prolonged submergence.

I would brush paint enamel, look at the Craftmaster range.

              Hi Tim,

Totally agree regarding temperature and humidity etc for spraying outside.

I may paint with acrylics and spray outside in Spring although it would be nice to sail it this winter at some point and not have to wait.

Hi Ashley , thanks for the info on Rustins acrylic. The no smell and ease of use are definitely what I am looking for.

What do you use over the Rustins acrylic to waterproof? Any brush on, non smelly, product by chance?

                  Hi Richard,

Thanks for your reply. I will take a look at the Craftmaster range.

I would like to stick to acrylic water based if possible, but understand that they may not last over time on the pond and so would like to find something to go on top to waterproof.

If all else fails, I may look into using enamels.

                    Hi All,

I’m not a fan of acrylic paints, they seem to take loads of coats, granted I don’t spray much but rely on enamels and Ronseal varnish, but not the water based stuff if I want a matt or satin finish, I use Guildway paints for my aeroplanes as it’s fuel proof.

                    Regards Ray

…but I am Ray! The rustins needs no sealer to last. all our landers and all sorts are painted with Rustins and for the amount of time that they are in the water, they are more than adequate.

I have found that most water based acrylics will take Halfords clear lacquer ol ( but test first!)

I use craft acrylics from Hobbycraft and ‘pebo’.

                        Hi Ash,

You know me I can’t afford those expensive brands like you posh boys 🙂 Poundland for me !!

I suppose the easiest way is a peg on your nose ? problem solved 🙂

                        Regards 🙂 Ray

                          Thanks Ashley,

I will check out the Halfords clear but the fact that the Rustin Acrylic needs no sealer is a real plus. I will accept extra sanding in exchange for a smell free indoor paint experience.

Hi Ray – the peg is a cheap option! When the peg is off the smell is still in the house though.

To all – I am having real trouble trying to log in and see the latest posts. I go through the log in procedure but find only the posts from a day or two ago and then no way to reply. It has taken me lots of attempts and several browsers to get in. Thanks for the replies , it is much appreciated, if you don’t hear from me it is because I can’t post. Any further suggestions for non smelly products much appreciated, and by others as well going by discussions I have had recently.

I think the log in problems tend to be more with Android powered devices such as phones.  Try from a PC or laptop if you possibly can.

                                Hello Float,

Yes the peg comment was my attempt at humour 🙂 As I’m the Lone Ranger for the last 3 years I don’t have a problem with the house, a heater in the shed works for me 🙂

When I first went to sea and, er, between wives, I was back living at home for a while at the same time as my younger brother was.  He was dabbling with car restoration at the time in my Dad’s very small garage and was having a go at respraying my Mum’s Morris Minor.

I’d been out for a while and, as I turned the corner into my parent’s road I was faced with a large red fire engine, firemen and hoses liberally scattered around the place and my brother sat on the grass verge with his head in his hands.  I pulled up, jumped out and went to see what was going on.  Apparently he was spraying the car in this very small garage and had decided to help the paint drying by putting on a small electric bar fire.  Not surprisingly the atomised paint hit the glowing bar fire and there was a substantial ‘bang’!  Luckily the garage roof remained in place and there was no major damage.  Also luckily the garage was not attached to the house.

Be careful with the heater Ray!

                                    A hard lesson learned then!

I am lucky in that my house is link detached with the garage between me and my neighbour. Consequently it never gets really cold and damp in winter due to residual warmth from the two houses. My models are on the small side so there is not usually very much surface to spray. I have a worktop attached to my Workmate and I set up an open booth made of cardboard on this. The item to be sprayed is set up in the booth and I wield the rattle can quickly for a few seconds whilst holding my breath (and wear a mask for larger jobs) and then make a hasty exit, shutting the door behind me. I leave it for half an hour before venturing back inby which time the fumes and overspray have dispersed.
