Hi i’ve just collected a boat which i bought off ebay. Its a Fairey Spearfish, looked ok on the photo, but on collection it looks as if the paint was put on with a catapult from 50 yards. Its a GRP hull and superstructure, with some lovely fittings under all of the paint. Whats the best way to strip off the paint down to bear bones to make it beautiful again?

      cheers Ian

        Hi Ian

I would refer you to Stavros on the Model Boat Mayhem web site, he is very helpful and is proffesional paint sprayer by trade, I am sure that he will give you the answers, failing that follow links on the Mayhem web site to painting

        Cheers

              Hi

It sounds like a MFA model if you use a standard paint stripper such as "nitromors" follow the instructions and all the paint will come off and leave the hull clean, wash off the excess than polish and the boat will be as good as new.

                  Ian

Dont forget to follow the instructions and do a small test area first then you should have no problems.

                  All the best

DO NOT USE STANDARD/WATER BASED NITROMORS ON GRP!!!!!!

Standard Nitromors contains methylene dichloride which attacks the polyester resin used in standard grp and can remove the gel coat as well as the paint. Find a boat spares supplier locally and get one designed for removing  paint from grp. Most towns/cities have canals/navigable rivers etc nearby and so have boat supplies shops in the vicinity.

                      Ian

A fair comment from Mike but in 30 years of stripping paint off both models and real GRP boats I have never had a problem as the stripper is not on long enough to attack the gel coat. But I dont want to cause any problems for anyone else so you had best disregard my comments.

                        Hi

Bought a cheap water based stripper today, worked a treat. washed it off immediatley there seemed to be no problem.

thanks for all of your advice everyone

                        regards

                          Hi Ian

                          That’s great news!

You will really enjoy this boat when you get it on the water, with the right motor on-board they are fast and very responsive they also benefit form being very tough so if you do have an encounter with the bank it will bounce and not crumple.

I look forward to seeing some photos of the completed model in the gallery.

                          All the best

                          Paul
