I have the greatest pleasure scratch building boats. The whole process is something that I gain a lot from. I like getting them to the water and seeing them run, but not as much as building them.

The biggest problem I have is storage, or rather the lack of. I don't have a lot of space to keep the boats I build.

I would be interest to know people or places that do this, any kind of assistance would be helpful.

          Hi Peter,

I'm using the space above our stairs to keep my "active boats" also keeps them out of the way of small fingers pulling bits off ! If your in a bungalow this is not such a great idea

Hmmm…yes. Could a web person please correct the thread title please?

My tip is to box up the boats. Make boxes out of 4mm ply, try to make masts and so-on de-mountable, and use foam to seat them in the boxes. Mine have simple sit-on lids, or you can hinge them with cloth or leathercloth.

THEN they can be stacked one on top of the other. Paint the boxes the same colour as the wall and the Mrs will think you have got rid of them…..wink

It's good to see your options gentlemen but my good lady is not so tolerant as yours seem to be.

My perfect option would be Build it (which I have already stated is the best bit) – Finish it – Sail it – Sell it to fund the next project. I am a pensioner and don't have a lot of disposable income.

Peter. Good idea but sadly you are very unlikely to recoup the cost of materials alone when selling.

We have discussed this before. Museum quality boats may be worth something…anything else??

Do you have any roof/loft space to park the boats???

Never really had much problem, but the secret is not generally acceptable to most model builders. Make them small, (building costs negligible) don't take long over it and build merchant ships rather than warships or small boats. When sold, hand over all the money to wife. In that way, you never get any agro about building them!wink
