Evening all, I have an issue regarding a sound unit I am installing. Im very new to sound units, and producing good quality sound in general so all advice would be welcomed!

I have recently purchased an action electronics p110 noisy thing. I am very pleased with the unit and by no means am I pointing the finger at the unit being at fault. However, I just cant stop the attached speaker from crackling when I turn the volume up!

I have coupled the unit up to a 4" Visaton 8ohm speaker, the label on the box says 10w 15w and 130-20.000hz. I thought this would be a suitable speaker as the P110 has an inbuilt 20w amplifier.

        Im very confused!

        Thanks in advance, Chris

Have a talk to Comp shop.

I'm guessing that the crackle is distortion when you turn the volume up. There may be a clue in the 20 watt output of the p110, and a speaker that is rated to 10 or 15 watts. Watts output can be quoted in different ways with audio gear, so talking to component shop as suggested is good advice.

            Chas.

In any sound system, the speaker needs to be able to handle more power than the amplifier can put out. Turning the the volume up will cause the speakers coil to try to exceed its possible travel, causing the moving part to hit something solid and stop suddenly while it is supposed to be moving. This distortion can be described as "crackling". Overdriving will break the speaker sooner or later. If a coil winding has been jerked loose, its already broken – a loose winding will also give a noise that translates to "crackling". Persistent overdriving will heat the coil enough to start the enamel insulation melting, also not good as it will eventually break the amplifier out put stage.

Hi Chris, I can't get that link to open on my tablet, but why not get the proper Mylar speaker from component shop? Tryed and tested for the job. Water resistant too. Dave (ex action electronics) used to make the point that an ordinary speaker won't last long in the damp of a model boat. I live 1500 miles from him, but I think I can hear him muttering!

Ps. Don't forget to make a proper baffle board mount. It makes a huge difference.

The 4" mylar speaker is rated at 10W and was OK for the P101 amplifier if you restricted the input voltage to about 12v (which is pretty much standard on large model boats anyway). Only at 18v will that amp produce 15W, which is far and away too powerful for the cheap and cheerful 4" Chinese speaker.

P110's Class D amp is above my pay grade and the unit was produced with negligible input from me (I have sold the business, after all!). Iain Lewis, the main man at CompShop, is a graduate audio-electronics engineer and should be au fait with all the little foibles of his new baby by now. I'd strongly recommend speaking to him. Meanwhile I wouldn't argue with a word which either Malcolm or Chas have said – it's all good stuff.

Many thanks to all replies! I have read through and taken on board all of the invaluable advice. I have ordered a suitable speaker and I am now going to experiment! 😀👍
