the first time I used it Bob, was the night the “Riverdance” went aground at Bispham….it was quite exciting to watch the whole catastrophe unfold before your eyes.

It’s great to watch on a stormy winter’s night when vessels are dodging before the wind, or hiding in a lee shore…………very interestiong indeed.

It must be a sort of Air Traffic Control……..but a marine version?

Right now, it could be a bit of fun trying to trace that ship that was highjacked in the English Channel…………….Pity I`ve forgotten her name, but it was in the Sun this morning!

              Glad you liked it, Ash………………Bob

It’s a system similar to that of a “black box” on an aircraft that sends a signal via GPS every 30 seconds to 2 minutes depending on how it is set up, and although not mandatory on ships, is now a safeguard , but is not infalible.
The first thing the “pirates” would have done is disable the transmitting module, as it is (unlike an aircraft, where built into the airoplane’s fabric) usually situated in the bridge, and easily accesible.
Sadly, Bob, I doubt that she will be seen via AIS again.

We saw the square rigger….Stavross S Niachos….Leave New Brighton two weeks ago, and have been following it`s journey around UK.

                  It first called at Douglas, IOM….Then Belfast…and now it`s off Dunkirk……here…   http://www.shipais.com/showship.php?mmsi=232007330
