this may be a very simple problem, but I don't want to make a major error. This is my first endeavour at plankng a hull.( Everything previously has fibreglass )

I have completed the first planking, everything is ready for the second. I used white glue on the first, do I continue with the same or is there a better alternative.

I would appreciate any suggestions with thanks.

White glue is usually quite good providing that it is waterproof and the tension on the planks is not to great. However given the investment in time and effort involved in planking a hull I would opt for a twin pack epoxy glue.

          Good luck

Sorry to contradict you again, Paul, bur two pack epoxy is not really suitable for hull planking?

Due to the messing about with mixing the glue for each individual plank

I would use Pva, which is ok when painted etc

Suppose it depends on the type of model

Contradiction is the spice of life and I enjoy our discussions about the more technical aspects of model boat building.

You are correct that the choice of glue depends upon the type and size of model and bless you for being polite as my choices of materials are governed by my experiences in building larger models (and designing composite timber beams for buildings)

A good quality PVA is more than adequate for building model boats.

I feared you may have been a bit miffed with me looking over your shoulder and chipping in!

We are both to long in the tooth to be miffed about such things and I can say, without any false platitudes, that I would always defer to your opinion when it comes to model building.

Long may you look over my shoulder and offer your advice.

                    I use contact cement.

It seems to last ok as my tug was built this way 26 years ago and is still in constant use.

I have always used thick super-glue for second planking as it eliminates the need for unsightly pin holes.

Clary. Arn`t you glad you asked!! the upshot of all this is; any glue is ok. For any glue there are advantages and disadvantages. You use what you like to use and if it is sufficient to hold those planks in place, thats ok. An Aliphatic (generally a puce yellow colour) PVA migth be good, as this is slightly easier to sand than normal PVA; Ashley (usues normal PVA for almost anything)

I always use aliphatic for planking now having had a bad experience with non-waterproof PVA. Planking is a lot of work, so why spoil the ship etc? IMHO!

Aliphatic is good as a general model boating wood working glue but Deluxe Materials Superphatic is an attractive alternative as it is a woodworking equivalent of superglue.
