      Hi all..

I will try and explain this in as much detail as possible without going over the top. Basically, I have built a model from scratch and two years ago coated with a final layer of paint. I then left the model which I have now subsequently returned to..to complete. I decided that I would give a quick rub over and then recoat with sanding sealer before applying another coat of paint – just to give the structure a bit more rigidity before sailing. However, having applied the sealer on top of the paint, sub bubbling or blistering has occured and now a non-uniform layer is apparent across the hull. How can I resolve this error? I am considering applying a layer of paint to see how it pans out. Then it can be rubbed down to level off and recoated for the final time?

      Any help will be appreciated,

      Sam

On the assumption that you finished the model 2 years ago with enamel paints , the sanding sealer that you have applied is cellulose based and that will always attack an oil based enamel paint. There is no easy way around it but to rub down the whole thing and paint it again – I would suggest sticking to enamels. Enamel paint, e.g. Humbrol tinlets can be safely applied over Cellulose, but not the the other way round. I use Cellulose as a primer on a fibreglass hull and then paint with enamels. Some so called acrylic aerosol sprays can also atttack enamels.
If you want a good hardwearing finish to be applied over enamels, then Ronseal Clear Polyurethane Varnish (Gloss, Satin or Matt) will give a nice even hardwearing finish. This is oil based, not water based. Many DIY stores are promoting low odour water soluble varnishes now, so make sure you get the right one. I have finished all my models with this for many years with no problems.
