Some while ago my son bought a 540 motor for a battleship he was constructing. On bench testing it proved to be a very thirsty motor. Looking in through the cooling slits we could see the wire used for the windings was very thick (it looked as though it had been wound with copper rod rather than wire!).
A modelling aquaintance of ours at the time unearthed an article on how to go about rewinding a  motor from an old copy of MB. I think it was written by GLYN GUEST, though I could be wrong.
Do any members have a copy of that article or any others on this subject please?
      Rick.

I have a copy of this article – which is one of Glynn’s – in Word format.  The photos are a bit fuzzy but clear enough to see what’s what. I used the directions in it to rewind several 540 motors with total success. If you send me your usual E-Mail address then I’ll forward it to you. (PS Don’t let GG hear about this!)

Rick, the only thing you can achieve by rewinding these types of motor can also by done by changing the supply voltage.
There is a handy flash demonstration on the mabuchi-motor website.

Is it worth rewinding these sorts of motors? They are cheap enough.

“Of course not! I thoroughly enjoy wasting my time indulging in such pointless exercises – nearly as much as GG enjoyed wasting both his own and everyone else’s by writing about it…………..”

                Why not give it a try? I turned a 6v 3-pole 540 fire-breathing monster into a 12v low-drain pussycat by using Glynn’s method. 60Watt/Stallspeed/Whoever may have a point about supply voltages, but I’ve yet to find a 2.9v SLA battery……………….
Suit yourselves; it worked for me.

                  Ha! I thought so.

GG wasnt actually wasting his time much, as no doubt he was paid for his article !

Just out of interest when was GG`s article published??

The only re-winding I do nowaday is with me rubber band boats ..

Blowed if I can remember, but I have a copy of the full article as a Word document if you’re interested. The photos haven’t scanned too well, but enough to be able to see what’s what. Send me your usual E-Mail address and I’ll forward it.
BTW Being a Modelling God,  GG is usually offered libations, worship and sacrifices rather than money………………..

I have nothing but praise for GG.  His boats are my sort of boats/ships. Fairly simple and straightforward construction, easy to adapt, easy to jazz up if required , and looking (on the water) like whatever it is they are supposed to represent.

Most of my boats are in the “GG style”.    I dont have either the time or patience for the fine detail…most of which is totally lost 10 feet out from the jetty in any case and is all too easily broken.

                        So you can
                        * buy a higher voltage motor
                        * use a smaller prop
                        * go easy on the juice lever
                        * get a speed controller that you can turn down the volume
and there are possibly yet more  easier alternatives.

So have you actually read Glynn’s piece? If you had then you would know from the first paragraph that your rather obvious suggestions (above) had already occurred to him. That being the case then I reckon his article merits more consideration than you appear to have given it.
Perhaps you might be persuaded to wax lyrical on the subject of motors yourself for our benefit in the pages of MB? You certainly have much to say on the matter on this forum. Don’t forget to include plenty of pictures of your own models as/when/if you do.

Excuse me but I made absolutely no reference to Glynn’s piece, you did.
I offered up a link to Rick that goes on to illustrate what the effects on a motor the rewinding has.http://www.mabuchi-motor.co.jp/en_US/technic/t_020203.html

Yes I noticed the article long ago.I paid it no more or less attention than any other article but I did power plant design many years ago.

It would seem I have unintentionally stirred things up a bit by my original request!
In conclusion I would like to add that, following GG’s article my son and I turned the battery guzzling 540 into a much more docile powerplant giving the model a handsome maximum turn of speed together with a sensible sailing time before charging was needed.
Besides this, it also gave us a sense of achievement in doing something we had never thought of trying before.
                              Rick.
