      Hi Everybody,

With 4 channel R/C (two sticks) is there a protocol for rudder and throttle control or is it just a case of do your own thing depending on whether you are left or right handed?

          Len,

Do whatever suits you. The important thing is that you are comfortable controlling the model.

            Thanks Colin,

Shall do so. When I flew (crashed!) model airplanes (some 20 years ago) there was much ado about protocol so you could hand over the TX to an good flyer to get you out of trouble. I suppose model boats are different although I suspect the 'fast electric lads' might disagree! Anyway, I shall take your advice and do my own thing. I'm left handed and my controls shall be set so.

The set-up was always as the sketch when two channel systems were the norm for boat models. i.e. right (rudder) stick to the right would move the rudder to the right when the model is viewed from the rear. With the left (motor) control stick up for forward and down for reverse, with the exception of non-reversing craft e.g. i/c powered models then the spring would be removed and the stick down would be tick over, moving the stick upwards for full throttle. With a yacht again the spring would be removed, close hauled at the lower position, moving the sails out as the stick is moved up.

As Colin says nowadays, with 4 channel sets it seems to be whatever you are comfortable with, but I have always stuck with the old set-up.

Hi Tony, thanks for that. Played around with no end of combinations. Rudder and throttle on one stick is not good (at least for me). Some things are intuitive and I eventually arrived at what you call "the old set-up"!
