What is the advantage of having half of the porp out of the water when running at speed? Many very fast craft use this method and it would seem to reduce the thrust available. Obviously there must be some advantage, what is it?

          Mornin` Rick

I`ve often wondered about this……….it`s actually called ….”surface piercing” and the idea is to have only one blade in the water at any one time………seems to work and makes a lot of spray!

I`m thinking of doing this on my Slo Mo Shun model………the experts also use flexible drive shafts, so that the prop shaft is horizontal at the rear end and are fitted with vertical adjustment

          All clever stuff!……………….Bob

            Hello Rick

It all down to the design of the prop, if you have a close up look at a high speed surface piercing prop and compare it to a more traditional prop you will see quite a difference.

Found this on the net…….it`s very technical!

Bob, you would have to have some power to fit a surface piercing prop. They are designed ONLY to work half in the oggie, and getting your slo mo up high enough may take a bit of doing….but….with a big fat i/c power plant…hmmmmm

Thanks fpr the web site details Bob, as you say rather technical. I will need to read it carefully. Lower drag, fuel economy and high speed advantages but poor low speed control seem to be the main points.
                  Rick.
