I purchased a replica pond yacht at a boot sale – seller seemed to think it was not complete.. Having repaired the mast and put it together .as best I can – it appears to have been rigged as a gaff cutter and indeed the foresail is missing.

Obviously it was never meant to sail as the rudder is virtually inoperative and the mast is loose in its deck fitting and appears to be too far back. One puzzling thing is the gaff top mount is duplicated further up the mast. At first I thought it might be for a larger sail – but why would a non sailling yacht need that ?

any advice on correctly re-rigging would be welcome, the gaff rig makes fora great looking boat..

Is it this sort of thing? : **LINK**

There are lots of display models of this kind around – I believe craft workers in Vietnam specialise in this sort of thing. If so, this looks like a picture of it in full rig with the upper gaff…

thanks Dodgy – always at hand when I have a query.!!!!!!!!!!!!! Between the 2 pictures can now sort it out, not going to fit a 3rd foresail or the top gaff sail. Looks a bit overblown like that almost in the style of an early English customs cutters used against the Cornish smugglers & French privateers which was totally over the top with sails everywhere.

The reason it is 'overblown' is that it is a model of the US America's Cup winner 'Defender' **LINK**

Unsurprisingly, racing yachts are going to have a lot of sail area…..

What are the reasons for which you feel the model is of Defender.? From photos on Google, I find that her l.o.a. to freeboard, l.o.a. to overhang and especially her tiller length to l.o.a. ratios bear no resemblance to Defender.

I'm troubled by the overall look of the boat. The tiller and the diameter of the spars seem way oversized compared to the lines of the hull. They give the impression of a 20' boat.

If one were to hypothesize a freeboard of 3' or 4' , I wonder what the l.o.a. would end up being. I sense a boat of about 50'.
