Hi there; if this is your first plank on frame build, I would advise using Birch ply of no thinner than 5mm in thickness for the frames and keel; and for the planking I would either use Obechi or Lime wood (which come in various lengths and thicknesses) and which can be obtained from good model shops. Normally, I use between 6mm – 8mm wide planks 1.5 mm in thickness.
The planks are pinned with brass pins. These pins are roughly between 8mm and 10mm in length to the frames and also glued with Aliphatic wood glue – you can purchase that in a variety of sized bottles – the glue is yellow in colour but tends to dry clear ‘ish to an off cream colour.
If you want a good ‘walk-through’ build, may I suggest joining Mayhem Forum website – have a look on there – on the master build sections. Look for either the Cervia tug build or the Frederique Spashette build.
Also, on the Mayhem Forum, warship dept there is HMS York D98 at 1:96 scale build.
These may be of some help.
