Paint Colour

Hi All,

I am trying to find out if there are Humbrol colours that are a match for the following WW2 Coastal Forces.

 – Deck and upper surfaces of a Fairmile D that would have been operating in the channel area.

 – Crew uniform (dark colour0 when out on patrol.

 

I have a copy of the book Anatomy of a ship that shows a fairly blueish grey for the deck

Hi Haig

 

When I built my Vosper I researched the 1940 – 1942 period and found that many boats were painted matt black however this changed after 1942 and only a few boats finished the war in this colour.

Whilst being true to history it doesn’t make a very eye catching colour scheme.

 

Some boats ended up with dark grey decks / upper superstructure and one was even painted white with blue lines.

Thanks Paul,

My research from Allied Coastal Forces of WW2 (vol 1) Lambert & Ross indicated

G45 – grey and white (side surfaces), and B15 – a very dark blueish grey for upper surfaces and decks.

 

From another website similar to one you suggested I found paint chip colours

I had not seen any Fairmile D models in any of the mags or photo galleries with the decks this colour so I thought it better to check.

They do a full range of navy colours. Where there has been confusion with Ref nos I have emailed them and they replied within a couple of days with an answer.

During research into channel crossing boats of WW2 I found that many different colour schemes were employed, often based upon the individual Captains perception of what might be best to suit particular conditions.

For example the SOE used speedboats that were coated with blackboard paint and flat dark green stripes which helped to break up the lines of the boat, even at very close quarters.

Thanks Kevin & Paul,

 

I have visited the WEM website and purchased a few tinlets of the G45 & B15 shades.

This will get me the correct shades.

 

I will post a couple of photos of the unfinished boat into my album.
