This was my very first boat that I bought for £25 about 20 years ago. I was wodering if anyone knew which paddle steamer it was a model of. I have tried to trace it on the internet without success. It was originally driven by rubber bands which were hopeless and I managed to gear it instead which proved perfectly adequate. I have sailed it every year since I bought it. I was also wodering if it was made from a kit or scratch built.

Took a look at some paddle steamer books but unable to positively identify. The one which looks the nearest is the early river Thames paddler Eagle of 1856 Have you tried asking the members of paddleducks, which is a site dedicated to paddlesteamer modelling?

A nice looking model, well worth the money.

Thank you very much Tony for the information. I thought at one time it was a model of a paddle steamer which took convicts over to Australia but not at all sure about this. I wondered if you could send me a picture of the Eagle if possible. Do you need my email address for this or not as I am fairly new to this site and have only just found out how to post pictures. Just let me know. Regards Colin

Not the Eagle…..that was a passenger ship

Your model looks more like a blockade runner from the US civil war?

Thank you for your reply Bob and information. I shall continue my research with the US Civil war. Back in my memory I remember the boat having a picture in Model Boats but since then ages ago lost the booklet. This tempts me to ask if this jogs anybodys memory who keeps back copies. Regards Colin

Hi Bob Thank you very much once again for your help. This looks a very close resemblance. But one thing is that my model only has the one funnel. How do I get hold of more detail such as a coloured picture of the Phantom to compare. Your help is much appreciated Regards Colin

Here`s a blockade runner with a sigle chimney

                      She`s renamed as USS Malvern…

That looks it has a walking beam engine, which points it at a US craft, probaly lake or river, maybe coastal.

Guessing at the size of the original of Colin's, probably not intended for long ocean voyages – it wouln't have room for both the coal and a useful payload. Blockade runners would operate from the Bahamas and any convenient British posessions in the Caribean, and would be relatively small and fast for the time. If a name is wanted, some research pointed at American Civil War blockade runners might produce a picture of something that looks close enough. Since it was probably a generic model, this should be "close enough".

Hello there again Bob and also Malcolm. I haved looked the USS Malvern up on the website under USS Malvern American Civil War Home and there is a clear picture of the single funnel paddle steamer which seems a very close match to me. Thank you for your help. Regards Colin
