It's a lite ply frame. I did consider lamination of balsa but don't think I have anything thicker than 3mm. I will have a look if I have any bits of something thicker. But it seemed a lot of lamination with the sheet I may have. But I have plenty of time at the moment.

I have some balsa blocks about 2" x 3". If you'd care to 'exercise' over in this direction then I might leave one at the end of the drive……. I'd suggest block infills below the chine and ahead of the first frame but if you use 2mm liteply with the grain running chine-to-deck then it will happily bend to the curve right up to the stem.

Thanks for the offer. I have found some scraps of balsa sheet and strip so think I will be Ok with the bottom half. I will try your suggestion for the top half. If I get stuck I may decide to take the dog for a drive in the countryside near Lambley.

Filled in the lower bow with layers of balsa. Should be ok once the filler goes on. Will put the motor and prop shaft in next before I put the sides on.

Some progress since last post. Side skinning started in 2mms lite ply.

I vacuumed up the sawdust before taking the pictures. I like to keep up on the dust , as my early career in Analytical Laboratories gave me a dust allergy. Not much in the way of PPE that worked in the sixties and early seventies.

Unfortunately not a beer cooler but a freezer, do have a beer / wine cooler in the house though! Wife was not keen on it being moved to the cabin!

Power will be a brushless motor from Component Shop, and a Quicrun Esc 30 amp.

The cabin / workshop was my birthday present to myself last year. It's the first one I have had that I don't have to empty so I can get in and move around, and not freezing cold in winter.

The superstructure is still giving me problems but think I am getting there with Mark 2. Will take some photos 'll after.

The superstructure does seem to fit into the deck oK, although it may need a magnet to secure it.

My work bench is always covered in tools, as I seem to have to use all of them in rotation.

the sanding gets done outside mostly, so I don’t normally have a sawdusty top.

Foam is the way forward for boat stands. Easy to shape and gives great bump protection to the boats in their boxes.

The superstructure now fits without a twist. Not sure how many times I took it to bits before managing to straighten it. Hull is being coated with resin and glass cloth.

Little bit more progress. Hull has glass cloth and resin coat . Rubbing strip added. Missile tubes being made. The drum tilt radar built some detail to be added. The 4 missile tubes are all slightly different due to the sloping deck.

Made a start on the AM230 guns. One for the bow and one corvette stern. The turrets are from styrene and car body filler. The gun barrels will be next, from 1.5mm tubing. The black paint is just for checking for any more filler.

Very nice Tim. Very nice indeed. Although they call the Phalanx CIWS “Daleks”, these are the real m’coy!

Incidentally the Phalanx system has not got a good track record when it comes down to it. It was only ever meant to be a stop-gap, but it’s still here…bit like opening hours and the speed limit on motorways!

Been working on the mast the last few weeks. The radar platforms have been testing my soldering skills. More detail has been added to the missile boxes. May move on to the open bridge next.

I have made a Pelorus and a Target Designation Sight for the OSA I . Challenge for my clumsy fingers in 1/48 scale. Just started painting them but mostly grey.

Just started painting a couple of Decoy Rocket launchers for the OSA 1. Small in 1/48 scale, but not too hard following Dave Wooleys article from MB a couple of years ago.

Plus some liferaft canisters.

So hopefully I may be able to put in the water later this year.

Had a slight setback and delay as I have made the mast for the third time, using finer brass rod this time

Also, made few hatches and vents for the deck.

Back to soldering now for the railings.

After several tries I have managed to get the hand rails on the superstructure. Need to decide how to fix the mast so it's removable. Could do with figures being painted and doors and windows to add to the superstructure.

Three attempts and lots of brass wire. I'm following articles in the magazine from a few years ago so that gave some tips to follow. The pictures help work out the sizes, just have to remember the the articles are for a 1/35 model whilst mine is about 1/48.

 

Windows and some deck details next, and get the radar to rotate.

Started adding some of the deck detail. Still have some stanchions to fit.

Mast is now removable for storage. Motors for the radar fitted. Just started making some Nav lights and a light for the stern. Trying to decide how to turn modern British Infantry into Soviet sailors.
