Just to start  the ball rolling I thought it would be  interesting  to create a new thread under the heading “One of my Favorite Maritime Pictures”  It doesn’t have to be a boat , ship  so long as its theme is maritime .
Getting the ball rolling  how about this adventuress  sailor/driver  trying his best to drive  or should that be sail down the River Mersey THE WRONG WAY having a maximum speed of around 9 kts , on a good day against a tide of 10kts . The results , well he didn’t get far  but did he get his licence endorsed ?

At the risk of being accused of blowing my own trumpet, one of my favourite maritime pictures is one I took myself. It is a shot of the QE2 at anchor off Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii, taken from one of the ship’s boats as we were going ashore.

We were fortunate enough to be on the homeward leg of her final world cruise, from Sydney to Southampton, from February to April, 2008. It was an unforgettable experience.

This picture sums up, for me, the end of a golden age and the start of another.

It is so evocative to see that great ship being towed to the breakers by that dirty little steam tug and yet the development of steam gave us some of the greatest ships of all time.

I remember seeing this picture for the first time when I was 10 and being captivated by the sadness of image.

But as a builder this photo just knocks me out.

I could post hundreds on this subject! However I thought people might like to see this very nice figurehead I photographed on a traditional sailing vessel in Brest a few years back.

Paul, I have “The Fighting Temeraire” hanging over my mantelpiece, and Dawson’s Ariel and Taeping on the opposite wall!

Like them or loath them the modern cruise ship  has changed the face of sea travel .
I thought of including two pictures that show  the stark contrast between shots  of the cruise ship Crystal Symphony  taken on the River Mersey June 08.

This  stricking picture { from official sources}  is of the USCG sail training vessel Eagle  but does any one know what the original name was and the country of origin?

She used to be the German sail training ship Horst Wessel and was built in 1936.

I took this picture of HMS Warrior today at Portsmouth. The tide was right out so it was possible to walk right down to the end of the adjacent slipway.

Hi Colin Your spot on with answer . Question does Will Mowells magnificent model of the Warrior still reside in the entrance foyer to the Warrior . It’s been a long time since I last saw the model.  Warrior like the Great Britain  is such  an iconic vessel I hope  one day , at least before May 31 2016 they restore the Caroline  to its original appearance. Some how I think  this will remain some what wishfull thinking!I     I  like your picture and I think  some of  these personal shots could go into a  Model Boats calendar !!!

The lakes particularly Windermere are well known for their steamers . Yet  Coniston Water has its piece of steam history and a wonderful experience it is.    The Steam boat Condola cathering up speed  on a rather misty  April day.
