      Good day model boaters,
I have a speed 600 motor, powered by a 7 cell NiCd pack through an ESC.  I need more power and intend putting a brushless motor in.  Trouble is that the motor and the LiPo pack and the speed controller are a bit costly to do in one go and I am going to do it in stages.  Some questions for the experts. 1. Can I use a brushles motor with the present battery and ESC as a start?  2.  Can I then get the ESC as the next stage and the LiPo as the 3rd stage?
Any advice would be much appreciated.  Happy boating.

Sorry but the answer is no. Brushless motors are three phase beasts and need specialised controllers for them to work, so you will need to buy the motor and controller at the same time. However the lipo battery can be bought later as it’s just a source of amps and the motor doesn’t care where the amps come from, just how many.

Brian. it might be a silly question, but a 600 motor is only at the 1/2 way stage to the awesome power of a bbspeedturbosupercharged 900 (say)….you are spending money on completely different stuff here…could you not simply get a hopped up 600 or shoehorne a 700 in?? retaining your existing control and battery setup (and not costing so much) ??

or are there space and weight issues here not advertised?    What sort of craft are you hopping up?

Try Hobbykings site for cheap Watercooled brushless Motor’s and esc’s for about $110US for a ($69.95)120amp Watercooled ESC and watercooled brushless($38) 3900kv motor (540 sized) it will be twice as powerful as a speed 600. Or you could get one of there cheaper non cooled 500-600( around $22US) sized brushless motor’s( about 2250kv much more torque) and put a water cooling coil or jacket on it.

              Cheers Bruce

Thanks for the replies Mike, Ashley and Bruce.  All most useful and appreciated.

                1. Ok, I will have to come clean!  The application I am talking about is an electric powered glider.  So water coolling is out (but see 2. below).  I will buy the motor and ESC first, followed by the LiPo battery.
                2.  I have recently been able to instal a water cooling coil in a Vosper RTTL with a speed 540.  I have had the alluminium tube for some time but was not able to coil it without kinking.  Only recently have I borrowed bending springs and the result is fantastic.  Now to try it out.  When I can figure out how to attach a photo to this forum I will post a photo.
                Happy sailing.
