I do not like the ships that are being built nowdays. Pure profit and economic factors have destory the romance of the old ships. Containerisation killed the old cargoships with their many masts and lifting booms.
Take for example the new container ships. A huge rectangular floating box with a pointed end stuck on one end and a rudderand prop on the other. The new passenger ships are huge blocks of flats and shopping malls laid flat, made to float and that is it.
The old grand ladies who took passengers all over the world with their beautiful sheer lines raked masts and curves, raked smoke stacks. These ships had an aire of grace and majesty. Even the old cargo ships had graceful lines. Even though they had to work hard and sometimes looked more like rust buckets they still had a certain romance about them. They were still a pleasure to look at with their beautifull lines. It is just a pity that modern technology and the accountants have killed these old features.
Collin I agree with your article that these grand ships even though they are gone they were still the absolute queens of the seas. We must not forget the tall ships with all their sails and masts. A tall ship under full sails a pleasure to the eye. They were the ones who brought romance to the seas.
