hi all, I am looking to buy an X30 two blade 4mm thread plastic propellor for an on going build. I know they exist, as I already have one on another boat..however I cannot seem to find anyone who stocks or sells this particular beast, x35 and upwards, yes but not x30.

I have tried eBay, Cornwall, and several other model shops ( even Westbourne) to no avail – Hobby King won't let me on their site for some reason!

Can anyone point me towards a source of this elusive prop please, thanks.

Chris. Does it HAVE to be an X30? Can you use (for instance) a dog drive style prop of a small size and high pitch??

Have you tried Prestwich models? They are usually excellent at racing parts.

Hi Ashley, I've never tried using a dog drive, it may come to this!

Charles, thank you , tried Prestwich, no joy.

A pad of medium coarse sandpaper held close to an X35 prop while it is rotating seems to be indicated….

Hi Dodgy, keeping the profile for a racing prop will be difficult with that method. I tried it once and binned the result. Any tips welcome.

                    Hi Chris

I only use dog drives and never drop a prop into the deep, even in reverse!!!

Chris. Dog drive adaptors (collars with the dog bits on) are very cheap, and in point of fact if you use a grub-screw collar to hold the prop on then you can simply use a bit of unthreaded stainless rod for the propshaft.

The collar is just there to stop the prop coming off at rest or in reverse b earing in mind that when driven the prop is pushing forward onto the dog-collar. A couple of flats filed in the shaft for grub screw security and away you go.

Model marine supplies list a Graupner Carbon Hydro prop, 4mm thread at 29mm diameter..h-g2318-29 or a -31 (31mm) or a Dragon X432/3 carbon fibre prop, 4mm shaft (hole not threaded)

Have a look at SHG. They sell a prop, 2 blade, M4, 31mm dia. In "old money " that is 0.040" too large which means 20 thou needs to be removed from each blade tip……a simple needle file job.

                          Hi David

I would test the prop out first, but, would 20 thou make a big difference?

Remember to balance the prop first.

Thanks for all your inputs, I think that the X30 can no longer be in production.

I will have to try the nearest equivalent, and have a closer look at the dog drive possibility.

                            Thanks, Chris

ChrisB. To get back to my original question….does it HAVE to be an X30? and if so what sort of hull and motor/revs are you using it for?

Contrary to popular belief/practice, one website states "X pitch for slower revving engines" and S pitch (the shallower normal pitch) for higher revving engines. After a bit of experimenting I can agree with that unless its ultimate performance you need, and on one boat, a change of X to S with a 5mm diameter increase worked wonders.

Dog drive props will all have different profiles to an X, unless you make enquiries with someone knowledgeable. I cant remember what the pitch is on an X, but you should be able to get something in this pitch at least.

Hi Ashley, thanks for that. I am building a sister boat to one I already have. (Sea Princess cruiser ) First was built in Depron, this one is balsa. I wanted to keep drive train the same for a direct comparison. Depron one flys like a stabbed rat!

I have noted the X to S plus 5 mm, and will probably go this way.

                                Thanks for your input.

They are available and in stock, according to Cornwall Model Boats part number is R1455 http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/robbe-propellers.html

Secondly if you contact Mantua Models in Windsor they used to stock Graupner Props in that size, seem to recall the 2303 series were X Type
