Is there a formula for wiring leds and also does the use of resistors in the circuit help . Also is there a book available to help the novice in what appears to be a very tricky subject .

          Bob,

Have a look here: http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/components/led.htm for basic information.

You can also buy 12v LEDs which have a resistor built in. You don’t have to run them at the full 12v to get them to light up though, they will work pretty well on 6v.

A good source of LEDs is Component Shop http://www.component-shop.co.uk/

              Bob,

We are all amateurs and all have something to offer each other. If you have any more specific questions don’t hesitate to ask. If I don’t know the answer it’s likely somebody else will.

Incidentally, Grain of Wheat and Grain of Rice  bulbs are still good alternatives to LEDs. They can be easier to fit in confined spaces and can give a more realistic light. Some people worry about them ‘blowing’ but in practice if you run them at less than the rated voltage shey should last pretty much indefinitely in a model boat. Some of the models you see are lit up like Christmas trees with LEDs which is not altogether realistic. Navigation lights in particular are in fact quite dim when you are looking at full size vessels.
