Who has insurance? should I have insurance? is it 3rd party everyone has or value-of-model type? how much does it cost?
I have often wondered about this, it has stopped me entering a few of my more unusual craft at exhibitions (if you want to go on the pond) and why is it? Am I likely to kill maim or otherwise cause insuranceable type damage with my boats on the pond, and indeeed how many members have it?  Answers in a writ please,. Ashley

          Ashley,

Organisers of events are becoming more sensitive to possible claims against them if people are injured – all part of the ‘Elf & Safety culture nowadays.

Obviously, if you are running potentally dangerous models such as steam boats, hydroplanes or fast electrics etc. it makes sense to protect yourself against third party claims. People who run scale models often claim they don’t need it but what if somebody leans over your model and the mast pokes their eye out? In days gone by they would have accepted it was theit fault but in today’s blame culture you are more than likely to have a claim made against you or the organisers.

Clubs often have their own insurance but this can vary and sometimes only covers you for your own events or sailing on your home water. Insurance is one of the reasons I keep up my MPBA membership as this gives pretty well universal coverage. I think the MYA scheme offers similar benefits.

You can see a summary of the MPBA cover here: http://www.mpba.org.uk/mpba/mpba_insurance.htm

I cover my models through my home insurance as “named items” they are covered at home, on display or sailing at events and sailing on any water except the sea (I dont know why) the insurance also carries 3rd party cover.

Because our Marine Modellers club is a part of the Ballina RSL Club, we are covered by the RSL Club’s Public Liability policy for all club sanctioned events. The only requirement is that we keep an attendance record of members participating in any such event. This includes regular sailing days, plus any shows or exhibitions we may attend.

              Peter.
