Hi my dad passed away 3 days ago. He was on the hms belfast in the Korean war. I would like to do a model of his ship to remember him. Is there some plans that I can get? ?.

          Roo,

Very sorry to hear about your Dad, please accept our condolences.

Taubman Plans in the USA sell 1:200 scale plans of Belfast as she was in 1944. These drawings were originally produced in the UK and bought by Taubmann some years ago.

If you are thinking of building Belfast then get a copy of Ross Watton's book "Anatomy of the Ship – the Cruiser Belfast". There was another set of plans drawn by E.N. Wilson but these are part of the David MacGregor range held by the Brunel Institute in Bristol and currently unavailable.

Ross Watton’s book can be obtained from here:

          I hope this helps.

Dean's Marine do a fibreglass hull of the Belfast in 1/96th scale. This gives you a model of 78 inches with a beam of 13 inches.

He also does fittings for it, check out here:

Thanks for your condolences and help. I was hopefully looking for plans in the UK and the deans hull is to big. I was planning on doing a display model. I did buy my dad some plans to look at in the early 90s but have not found them in his estate yet might find them hopefully.

The plans you bought for your Dad might well be the Sambrook ones that are now being sold by Taubman. I wouldn't worry about buying from the USA if you can't find the originals. I bought some plans from a Canadian supplier recently and they arrived within a week.

Were you intending the model to be as in 1950 or would a world war 2 configuration be ok? If the former, there may be a problem as everything on offer appears to be as in 1943 -44 including the sambrook one. It should be possible to work out what to change for a 1950 appearance using the Anatomy of the ship book and the old Profile series would be useful too if you can find one but there would be a fair bit of scratch-building involved – notably the lattice masts that replaced the original tripod ones.

If as in 1943/4 what scale would you want to work in? That would help point to what the best solutoon might be – for instance would you consider modifying the Trumpeter 1/350th plastic kit?

You might find this an interesting page:

                    https://www.scalemodelnews.com/2020/08/building-1600-scale-airfix-hms-belfast.html

There is a lot to be said for a plastic kit if you are looking for a display only model. As above there is the old Airfix kit, which still looks good after all these years, but the 1/350th offering from Trumpeter is a superb kit and can be taken to an amazing level of detail with additional wooden decks and photo etched after market accessories.

                      belfast airfix.jpgHello Roo,

I'm sorry for your loss, I also miss my Dad who has departed for the boatyard in the sky a while back !!

I have been researching and gathering information to build HMS Belfast for years as she is local to me as I live in Kent, whenever I'm in town for business I find myself aboard !!

I have the David Mc Gregor plans are for 1942 they are drawn @ 1/192nd scale which gives you a boat 38" long, I'm planning to scratch build her at 1/96 twice the drawn size, my wife recently asked me why I wanted to build her that big, that stumped me for a while

Your welcome to paper prints of the plans + postage, If you personnel message me your address & email we can arrange something the prints will be around £12.00 for the 2 sheets.

                      Kind Regards

I agree with Richard in that a plastic kit model is probably more easily achievable and will take up much less room to display, especially in a case, which you will have to have as a display .

You do not state how much rom you have to display a large model, in fact you have not said what size model you want in any case!

I completely agree with Ashley, a plastic kit, particularly when enhanced with wood decks and photo etched accessories, can make for a very impressive display and, when accompanied by something such as a piece of memorabilia, is quite striking.

This is the Tamiya Bismarck and the picture was given to me by the Blohm & Voss yard where she was built after I had just had a look at the 1/10th scale builder's model.

                              Hello Roo

I know you from the model flying forum and welcome here. My avatar over there is Levanter.

For everyone else who follows here, Roo makes the most superb composite gliders. I am certain anything Roo builds here will be fascinating and I will be following closely.

As gliding has so many similarities with sailing maybe we can tempt you with a performance model yacht.

                              Best regards

Thanks tim. If I build a model hms belfast it will be a smaller model than my last model build. 20200524_133901.jpg

I to am looking to build a scratch model of H.M.S. Belfast. Copies of the plans seem to be difficult to obtain, would Ray be willing to supply another set to myself. Currently I am building 1/144 models of H.M.S. Cavalier and H.M.S. Amethyst. Hoping you can help,
