          Hi Dave

I shall be going on one of the days and hanging about the Etherow Model Boat stand

I hope Paul can make it, but he's rather quiet lately……..Hope he's ok

I shall miss the Charity stand, but carrying the stuff about is really too much for us now

          Bob

            Hi Dave / Bob

I will be there and will meet up at the Etherow stand. All that remains to be decided is the day and approximate time.

Meanwhile what do the forum deep thinkers make of this?

                Hi Paul

Your gadget looks very similar to the well known compressed air Venturi device?

Compressed air in, with ice cold air out one end and hot out the other end

Sadly, they never found a use for it!

                What does yours do?

                Bob

Oddly enough Colin these things can produce a huge amount of thrust but they don't work very well in a vacuum (or in fresh air)

It isn't my idea Bob its just some old technology that I am playing around with.

To help everybody get a handle on the subject:

The air is pumped rather than compressed and the steam is at medium pressure.

The reaction is caused by the steam condensing in the water/air mixture which pushes the water out from the rear of the unit.

                  Paul

                      Hi Dave

I prefer to go on a Sunday to Haydock, to avoid the traffic, but I`ll give it some more thought

                      Plenty of time yet

Sorry to have missed you at Kirklees……….I completely forgot about it………Senior moment!

I heard it was a good show

                          Hi Andy

It does look like a steam ejector….but it isn't.

The blurb describes it as an underwater jet engine and hints at phenomenal performance but the problem is that I cant find any technical data to support the claims.

                          Hi Dave

Either Saturday or Sunday is great for me but I don't have to deal with traffic so its over to Bob to make his decision.

                          Paul

                                        On the Soapbox here

Can't understand why anybody would hold a Model Boat Show on a Bank Holiday Weekend, where the roads are generally chaotic and half the population are off to the seaside with the kids!

Almost any normal weekend would be a better alternative?

Am I making any sense chaps?

If you want the paying public in then you will probably do better on a Bank Holiday. If it's mainly model boaters then yes, an ordinary weekend I would think.

Warwick is a big show but I think they are pretty much all boaters and their families.

I can see the pros and cons for both arguments but if the intention is not only to serve model boaters but to also attract new victims members to our hobby then August Bank Holiday is the best time. The traders seem to do well at Haydock and some of their takings must be from new comers especially as died in the wool model boaters are notorious for not spending huge amounts of money.

I think 'died in the wool' admirably sums up the status of many of us ageing modellers. laugh

No, Colin – that was the reference to not spending huge amounts of money.

I recall once being asked (by a customer with a South Shields accent) to barter for a motor mount which we were selling for £1.50. Not that all folk from that area are tight-fisted….other brands of tight-wads and skinflints are available.

Conversely there was a guy from Essex who rang up and ordered about £500-worth of electronic gizmos and asked if I could send them to his parents' address "because I'm getting married next week so this is my last chance to use the credit card without her knowing what I've bought".

I often wonder whether they're still together.

By Died in the wool I actually meant the old toothless grizzly bear like model boat builder who only emerges from his den at meal times and only leaves his home ground once a year to attend a model boat show. At the show he grumbles about the parking and the cost of entry and then grizzles about the traders prices to other boat builders.

Just like grizzly bears hunting the yearly glut of salmon these chaps gather at the event in huge numbers and tolerate each other whilst they begrudgingly indulge in their annual spending spree.

When the spending is over they wander away grumbling to themselves as they go back to their respective sheds, when the day is over the only evidence of their being there is the faint smell of cellulose and Vic and a bemused David Attenborough who arrived to late with his film crew.
